Being not a huge fan but thinking he was ok is far from the minority... Either full on love or hate would be much more of a minority from just reading through this thread.
He’s not Emrick (who some people weren’t big fans of either, and while this is subjective, those people were sick and wrong) but he was a solid play by play guy. And he was around long enough that people, who have feelings and stuff, are sentimental about him leaving.

I don’t have the greatest faith that his replacement will be as good, much less better. I also know that people hate change so no matter who it is, people will bitch a ton about it. (Hence the requests for ancient familiar voices from the past like Gary Thorne.)

The people who think Matt Loughlin is somehow better are also sick and wrong, there’s a reason he’s been the bench guy since forever. He’s simply worse at it.

And I wouldn’t be surprised if Matt got the job because that seems like the cheapest and easiest solution.

The weak link in the TV broadcasts for me is Dano. I would love Sal to do color commentary instead, but alas, I’m likely stuck with Dano for a very long time.

He was with the Mets on the radio, but that was going back 35 years.

yeah....I never knew that about Gary, tbh.

I only know the current Gary there and thought that was what was being referred.

When I first saw someone say "Gary Thorne from the Mets", I was like "did that person make a mistake and not do proper research"?

'Cause Gary Cohen is an outstanding PbP person himself.

But I do miss Gary Thorne, though.

Stunned that he and ESPN could not come to any agreement or deal.

Would love for MSG to extend an offer for him to do PbP for the Devils.

Loughlin always seems like he's like a second or two behind the play when I listen, so I'd prefer somebody else to replace Cangi, but as has been said, other options could be worse. Gary Thorne will always have a sentimental place for me because of all the games I watched in ESPN when I was first getting into hockey, but I wouldn't want him calling NHL games anymore, much less ours. I can hear it now...

I always wonder how much these guys get paid from this networks. $250,00? Less/more?
I’m sure it isn’t Tony Romo money lol

The replacement will be interesting to watch. IIRC their deal with MSG is expiring relatively soon. Xfinity and Comcast no longer have a deal. I wonder how much longer the Devils and MSG are even a thing tbh.

Thorne made one of the most dramatic goal calls in Devils history, I still recall watching it then and still gives me chills today:

I was at my girlfriend's house watching that. It was a big deal. I remember jumping up with excitement. I somehow convinced my parents to buy playoff tickets after I finished classes for the playoff run. I got to go to a few games against the Islanders at Nassau Coliseum since a few of my frat brothers lived near there and had a connection with an usher to put us in good seats somehow. That was fun. Thanks for sharing that.

Someone on Reddit posted this:

Laughlin replaces Cangy
Sal behind the bench as an assistant
PK takes Sal’s role

I wouldn’t mind this
A bit late responding to this but :

PK is going to get a brinks truck full of cash should he decide to retire and say he wants to go into broadcasting/commentating/analyzing NHL games.

But I would love for Sal to be Ruff's assistant as he would do an immensely better job (can't do any worse, to be frank) than Nas.

Though we'd still need someone to coach the Power Play...

Laughlin is getting mixed reviews here but he's the most possible replacement for Cangy at this point.

Somebody's been watching Epic Rap Battles of History (ie John Wick), I see. :snide:

But yeah...Gary's weakness is he does butcher names at times...

Still, though...we could do a hell of a lot worse than either Thorne or Loughlin.

BTW, MadDevil, do you think the reason Matt seems to be a second or two behind the play is because the radio feed is faster than the video feed he's watching?

I've always wondered about that.

I think if he does Live TV, it won't be so "out of synch" with his PbP.

What's your take on this?

One of the fun facts about clinching the playoff berth many might not be aware of was it was at the expense of the Rangers, it was between us and them for the final playoff spot and the Rangers won earlier that day beating Quebec, so we had to win straight out, a tie or loss by us would have given the Rangers the playoff spot.

It was all part of the plan.

I was still in college... ran down the dorm hallway and did a flip... kind of. Didn't quite rotate enough.

I still have the scars to prove it.

Oh yeah... I remember that. It made the win even sweeter.

The Devils on the YES network next?
Who knows, if you read what Xfinity was saying something like 98% of customers with MSG available never even watch a single program on the channel. YES in theory could pick it up I suppose but idk. I just hope whatever happens Xfinity carries it, I hate having to watch it on my phone using a friends cable log in for the MSG Go app.

It's possible, and I wouldn't hate if he ended up being the guy, I'd just prefer somebody else. I think he's suited better to doing studio stuff like he used to.
