I think this is dumb because he does have a team friendly deal. But I guess they're eager to extend Jarvis and Guentzel.

But... from my inside source KK has a very bad attitude problem. But his contract is indeed tradable, just don't know who'd take it. But my guess is he end up in either Vancouver, Calgary, Columbus or Edmonton.

It's not team friendly when you are nowhere close to meeting the expectations at that salary. If the cap hit is a long term 835k hit to the cap you have to look at it because ultimately that is nothing. If you think he doesn;t have a place on the team then you are thinking any player in 1-2 mil salary range can likely replace him. That saves you 1.5-2 mil in cap for the next 6 years. After than 835k is going to be nothing compared to the cap. As a team that wants to contend I think you have to do it.

You're not sitting in their meetings. Stop pretending you are.
Touchy, touchy.

Past behavior is a good indicator of future actions. They’ve never paid assets to be rid of a contract. Also, Friedman has been hinting at the buyout option.

Again, not rocket science to surmise that them dealing their 1st to be rid of Kotkaniemi, while a cheap buyout is an option, is ridiculous.

Your assumption that they’d consider that is absurd.

So what? The Canes aren’t other teams.

They essentially paid $6M for a 1st a few years ago. They’re not going to give one away to be rid of Kotkaniemi when the buyout is an option.

Not that hard to understand
a late 1st to save about $10m. if that's all it took i think the canes would do it.

I think it is hard to understand for one person lol. No idea why anyone would think the Canes would rather give away a 1st than a cheap buyout that barely hurts them. Silly talk.

don’t think they’d ever see it that way. They took on $600K of salary in a deadline deal for a 6th this year. If they value a 6th that much, how much do you think they value a 1st, even a late one?

Teams don’t trade 1st round pick value to dump contracts frequently enough to consider that a serious option here. Last 10 years, it’s just Marleau and Monahan, the former being buyout proof. Mrazek, Kassian and Datsyuk were dealt in modest trade downs.

I wish this were terrible for the Canes, I really do. But they'll likely buy him out, and that will be that. As the cap/inflation continues to compound, it will mean less and less.

It could be terrible for Koktaniemi. When stuff like this happens, players really need to change/diversify their games. He doesn't really give off the vibe that I'd expect that to happen. So, he ends up on a rebuilding team in their top 6 on a short term deal?

It’s not the best look to buy him out so soon after signing a long term deal, but yeah, certainly not the end of the world. If ever there was a year they need an extra $4M in cap space, this is it.

Sucks the buyout would potentially be so long, but the actual impact is minimal, especially with the rising cap. You never know though, they may find a team willing to take him on for future considerations, but I doubt that. Seems like a buyout is looming for sure.

Bad look? Meh. According to other GMs the offer sheet was a bad look to begin with. This may make them enjoy some schadenfreude, but not much else. If it has any effect, it will be to discourage future offer sheets. As if the idea wasn't discouraged enough. But only folks who make random youtube videos about players still being paid by teams they haven't been on in X years + their viewers will "care" otherwise.

An even worse look is sticking with him just because you refuse to admit a mistake.

Wonder if the Canes try to get the buyout to be over 20 years to let their social media team give one last dig at the Habs. Really stick it to them.
