It's not just that. They're still bitter about 2002. They're still bitter about 2006. They are still bothered we jumped up past them to #2 in the draft last year. They are currently bitter we kept them from the playoffs this year. And now they're bitter we not just matched their financial might in FA but we openly dunked on them in the process.

Nah, we beat your franchise (Harford) in game 7 in 1986 on our way the the Cup, so we are fine with you guys :sarcasm:

I think the glitch in the matrix glitched back and only the Swedish Sebastian Aho is left.

It was good while only the twenty of us were thinking about him, but then all the Habs fans started and it was too much brute force and it snapped.

That $8.454M AAV covers for all the apologing and smootching he supposedly needs to do.

He'll obviously make nice, and it will obviously be fine. The kid is not stupid.

Yeah, he's got no reason to apologize. He doesn't even owe an explanation. But he *is* going to have to talk about it. And as Hank noted, he'll say all the right things and everything will be fine. I will be interesting, when he talks, however, to see what direction it goes, because he *will* be asked why he chose this course of action. I'm not expecting Mueller-level testimony, but there will almost certainly be some interesting tidbits coming out of it.

“chatter” was the same wording used by this account a few hrs before the Aho OS:

Another one, not affecting CAR, would be quite interesting to watch, but I hope it doesn’t become commonplace...

See, now this is interesting to me. Marner is a legit target. Toronto's got about $9 million left under the cap (placing Horton on LTIR) and evidently, Marner doesn't want to sign for $9 million. To me, there *is* a number between $9 million and $11,634,000 that Toronto *will not* match for Marner. There was no such number for Aho.

Here’s a video from the talking heads that I don’t think has been discussed:

They say that right after CAR got the OS on Monday, they got multiple calls from other teams with high profile RFAs (TBL/WPG/TOR) urging/begging them to take the full week to match so they they’d have more negotiating time prior to MTL being able to OS again.

So there probably is a reason it hasn’t yet been made official yet on top of just being spiteful. Would love to say hey WPG, sure we’ll wait 7 days, if you’ll trade us Ehlers from Hamilton right after we match on 7/8....:sarcasm:

I figured as much. Even thought (don't remember whether I posted it here or on reddit) that there might be some 6th-7th rounders traded to us from those teams for, you know, "future considerations"

He wanted to get it done with and not spend the summer worrying about it.

Players sometimes choose arbitration because it sets a definite deadline to get the contract made. Trouba did it the next year after his holdout.

The new CBA, tv contract and being in his prime obviously were factors for his (agent) insisting five, but if I was Gerry I'd tell him not to say that aloud. He won't.

"I like this lenght. It's good long contract. I want to show I'm worth it."

Prolonging the negotiations in locked stances so that everyone starts hating each other's face would've been worse.

"I know it was an unconventional way to go, but I really hoped Canes valued me enough to match it. I think it's good contract for the organisation too."

I heard Tampa Bay offered a free weeks vacation at a nice million-dollar rental home on the Gulf Coast. Comes equipped with built-in grill, pool, tennis court, and round of golf at the nearest course. You bet they're taking that offer.

I would love making a run at Domi next offseason, with Marleau/Williams off the books we'll have $10 million cap space. But you have to actually want the player.

A better scenario would be if Kotkaniemi doesn't light up the stat sheet for the next two years, and we offer him something in that $4 to $6 million range.

yeah, nope. IF we retaliate it's going to be on Domi next year or on Kotaniemi the following one.
If anyone it would be Kotkaniemi. We wouldn’t have to protect him in the expansion draft then, snipe him.

The big issue is Svech will require re-signing, Necas will the following year, and most importantly Montreal will have a ton of cap cuz they aren’t signing anyone in UFA. I doubt we see a retaliatory offer sheet.

Montreal fans expect (want?) us to retaliate with a $4.2M 1 yr offer sheet for Lehkonen LMAO

I was actually wondering if there was a number for Armia that would really piss them off. Something low enough that the compensation sucked, but high enough that they wouldn't want to pay it. They really like him in the bottom six, and it would be fun to just screw with them.

We'd have to pay a signing bonus though, and the fallout from that combined with the bonus paid to Aho would 100% cripple the franchise forever and they would have to fold up operations within a year. GUARANTEED

Armia has one year to UFA. Today is the last day for a player to elect Arbitration (5 pm NY time).

He also has received his QO, which is for 1 year and (at least) $1.85M. It's open for accepting until at least July 15.

Which also means that MTL can until July 6th 5 pm NY time opt for club-elected Arbitration with offer of at least the total salary of the final year of the previous SPC (same as the QO).

If Armia signed an offre hostile, he would not be eligible to elect himself or be targeted by MTL for Arbitration.

$2,113,716 is the price point between 3rd and 2nd for a compensation.

Do we want to go up to 2nd for the pleasure of him choosing to play in Carolina over Habs?

Kotkaniemi reportedly idolized Armia when he was a kiddo. Armia of Porin Assat was the smooth-handed front-page boy in the provincial paper at the time, but he had to reinvent himself in NHL after getting sidelined. He was great PK in Jets.

I mean, they either get a 3rd for Armia or sign him on a deal that takes him to UFA. With one year, the extension can be signed only after Jan 1, 2020.

The downside is that a player probably don't want to be out of a contract for 2020-21 (not that they would get paid sans a Signing Bonus). We'll know by September if they'll terminate the CBA to end in 2020.

I'm a Habs fan dropping by with no ill will.

Personally, at first, I hated offer sheets. But all this discussion over this one has made me think what are the bonuses of offer sheets?

Offering teams are likely going to give the player what they want. Which is a real good contract that takes them into UFA instead of controlling teams wanting to buy a few UFA years on a team friendly contract. Which means teams will have to give their own RFAs similar deals eventually.

This means UFA markets would be much better (if it becomes commonplace) because the quality of players available in their prime will increase. It also means that maybe some of these middle of the pack players get more reasonable contracts instead of being severely overpaid. Because of this - trades could become more commonplace, especially at the deadline.

This would actually be awful for Montreal because no one wants to play here. But I think it would be far more interesting for hockey in general.
