Do you agree that a back-loaded, three-year deal would make it really painful for Toronto, and perhaps, they may not even try to match?

My point was only, as an academic exercise, to try and go for the 100 % accuracy you said you weren't sure off.

But seeing that TML's options around June 2022 would be:

1) a Salary Arbitration most likely ending in one year $11.9M SPC, or

2) the QO for one year $14M SPC, or

3) letting him walk,

I confirm it would be painful for TML, and maybe even impossible.

So give him 3 years, 30 million with it backloaded in such a way that year 1 = 7 million, year 2 = 10 million, year 3 = 13 million

I guess that would be possible, although I don't know why Marner would actually want it.

That was the report from Friedman last night. Marner is looking for a three-year term on an offer sheet.

Obviously means he wants to leave. ;)

I was more referring to him having to wait for his money.

Not that I couldn't live on 7 million in a year, I just don't think I'd want it distributed that way. Would be a nice "problem" to have though.

More likely 10, 7, 13 with the 7 mostly in signing bonus. 20-21 is the potential lockout right?

If a potential lockout is in 21-22 that makes such an offer a lot less palatable to Marner.

The potential lockout is either 20-21 or 22-23. If the CBA doesn't get terminated early to end in 2020 by either party, it will run its original course to 2022.

The double dip can be clearly seen in the recent contracts of the bigger names. :)

So Monday is the deadline, right? Does that mean it has to be matched by 12:01 Monday or is there some leeway?

Because I understand the reasoning behind waiting, and I understand other GMs have asked Waddell to wait until the last minute, but I don't want any unforeseen circumstances to arise and suddenly we're out our #1C because of an error (human or technological) somewhere along the way.

"The Prior Club, within seven (7) days after the date it receives the Offer Sheet, may exercise or not exercise its Right of First Refusal, which shall have the legal consequence set forth below."

If we got it on Monday, I think it's by the end of the next Monday.

Email is the primary method of delivery.

Ok, but I’d still feel better if we got everything settled by tomorrow. Which GM was it that missed a deadline to send out a QO to his RFAs? Was it Tallon in Chicago?

Whether it’s by fax, email, or simply human error, this isn’t something we can put at risk just to appease other GMs and minorly inconvenience Montreal.

Oh, they aren't going to stop just because the offer is matched. This will be played out over and over again for years.

I can hope they offer sheet someone else like Marner and we won’t have to hear about it.

We're going to hear about it no matter what. Our best player signed on to play somewhere else and we had to block it. No matter what the reasons are for what happened he obviously wouldn't mind playing for them. He probably doesn't mind playing for us either, but this is the result.

That's why the hive went so vehemently after the agent in the press conference. He's blowing smoke trying to take the focus off of Aho, he's marketing the kid as our beacon of hope. While the end result is we have our player at a good price and hopefully everyone on our side moves on without a hitch, everyone knows the player would have no problem putting on their jersey.

Which is the case for 99% of NHL players: they have no problem putting on another NHL sweater if it gets them more money and/or a better chance to lift the cup.

I don’t know why this is a surprise.

I’m with you. I’m fine waiting a few days to keep their picks tied up from making trades or another OS, but let’s not wait until the exact last minute.

It would be so fitting and like this .org to be like well damn we had all intentions to matching but the paperwork got lost. Something stupid like that.

Hopefully an announcement comes out tomorrow morning that it’s officially matched.
