Special teams has been far more of an issue for Carolina in the playoffs then goaltending. But they were there.
Carolina is too good of a team to keep bowing out due to inconsistent goaltenders.
Same guy who has been calling the shots for a while, he's just also behind the mic now as well.Who's even in charge in Carolina currently?
Yet inferior goaltending have been their demise almost every year they made it into the playoff. Their exit a few weeks ago all while dominating the play have been a prime example of it.Over the last 5 years they have the third most regular season wins.
Second most over the last 3 years.
I'd take that in a heartbeat.
This is the first year you could argue the starting goalie was the issue. Goal scoring in the postseason was a major issue against Tampa in 2021, against the Rangers in 2022 even with backup goalies, and particularly against Florida in 2023.Yet inferior goaltending have been their demise almost every year they made it into the playoff. Saros >>>> Necas, Canes should take that and run like hellIf the best they can get for Necas is Saros... that's a yikes.
But do you, Carolina.
Ok. Good luck with that.I'd take my chances in the playoffs as one of the leagues best teams, rather than one who snuck into the playoffs.
nah. age, next contract, and the likeihood of the decline of saros during the majority of the contract makes this far from true.Saros >>>> Necas, Canes should take that and run like hell
If the best they can get for Necas is Saros... that's a yikes.

I think that's a lazy defense. Goaltending is the single most reason why teams don't win a cup. An average goalie can suffice over 82 games but the Avs are one of the few teams to win without stellar goaltending. The reason not that many highly paid goalies win cups is because there's just not that many highly paid goalies. Two of the three Vezina nominees make relative peanuts. What teams have won with a high priced goalie recently? Tampa and Florida if they win tonight?
Or what else os carolina adding to get SarosIf the best they can get for Necas is Saros... that's a yikes.

Value is always relative to team needs, but anyway as much as the Preds need some 2nd line offense, we don't have any other starting goalie either, and having a goalie is more valuable to us than a 50-60 pt forward, so Saros > Necas for the Preds. As long as contracts don't trip things up.Very different players and situations but Saros should have at least similar and likely more value than Necas. Whether the Canes should target an elite goalie is debatable though.
Ftfy. Canes and Preds don't make sense as trading partners for Necas. If it's Necas...I might be asking forAskarov.Forsberg
But Necas +/- for a Preds goalie +/- is a logical base for a deal. That would be a big add for both sides.
So Carolina, practically the inventor of "goalies aren't differentiable on the whole, so we won't pay them like they are" are going to pay big for a goalie?

No idea how the inequality stacks up for the Canes, but it sure looks to me like they already have 2 goalies who have put up acceptable numbers as starters in the NHL, so even if they've already broadcast their intent to move Necas, the value is still probably "whatever some other team is offering for Necas" > Saros-to-a-team-that-already-has-2-decent-NHL-goalies-signed.
Carolina is trying to win now. They aren't waiting 2-3 years for him to be a #1If it's Necas...I might be asking for Askarov.

Tulsky is the analytics savant.Waddell is gone.
Askarov exists. I think he’s ready after watching the AHL playoffs.
Askarov got pulled in the AHL playoffs and then injured... he doesn't seem ready to be an NHL starter. He had pretty decent numbers on a very strong AHL team, but definitely has a lot to work on. Maybe he will be ready in a few years.Askarov exists. I think he’s ready after watching the AHL playoffs.

Even if the Preds uncharacteristically advance him as backup before he's truly ready, which isn't something the organization does often, that won't make him a starting goalie. I'd put the odds about 80% he'll be in the AHL. I guess we'll see what goalies the Preds sign next week, then we'll have our answer. He was drafted in 2020 as the #11 pick. I’d be surprised if he was in the AHL for more than conditioning next season.
