People here have been shitting on him because they like the idea of Michkov better. I guarantee the majority haven't even seen a Smith highlight video. The guy is one of the most exciting players to watch in this whole draft. And he has the skills and hunger to match. Would not shock me at all if he goes 3rd overall.
Me neither but selfishly i want him to be there at 5.

I want a skilled player like him on the habs for once

So you're telling me that per usual, all these ridiculous tweets and their wild pandering speculation is nothing more than noise and much ado about nothing? That their only use is to divide consensus and are being used to spoonfeed sheep and allow them to use these to prop up their own biases and fears and narratives?

That everything that people read at this time of year should be taken with a huge grain of salt until legitimately confirmed as truth?

Who woulda thunk?
Not exactly.

I think it’s just another example of shoddy journalism/ reporting. We don’t have fact-checkers and editors to ascertain the content of those taking positions.

So these wannabes are just lifting musings and ponderings from podcasts (which in and of themselves are mostly a source of opinion, conjecture and storytelling) and passing them off as fact, by not even paying attention to the caveats and contingencies that the podcaster himself is alluding to.

I am not telling you that they are doing it to prop a narrative. You’re free to arrive at that conclusion. I just think it’s a lack of journalistic rigor and a fallout from the usual lack of fact checking when lifting items from social media.

The quality of journalism in general is on a steep decline in the internet era. From the beauty of the writing to the investigative rigor, everything is going to shit.

I know because one of my hobby involves reading old newspapers dating back as far as the 1880s.

Sport journalism is no different. It's basically spam.

That's not true.

I saw the highlight video of Will Smith smacking Chris Rock like 100 times.

Starting with the bias that i would like a potential superstar at 5, i’m starting to think that it bodes well for montreal if michkov filters his interviews/try to influence his future team. I can see him favors washington (russian friendly and home of his idol), but in the unlikely scenario that he only talks with them, we are a strong contender for 2nd place. We have a good reputation aboard (rich history/most stanley cup, european city vibe/past russians loving our snow (take this sentence how you like)) and we are one of the teams with the best upward trajectory in the bottom-10. I’m pretty reassured that michkov may be interested in Montréal/do meetings. It will probably depend on molson/hughes

Bias in journalism was obvious before as well. You can still predict the tone or angle of a journalist if you know which newspaper hires him.

For what it's worth, you should probably apply that same reasoning to the hype articles that anoint Michkov as the next Gretzky. Especially since basically none of us have seen him play a full game since 2021

Atleast I have seen with my own eyes how good he is as a player ON the ice to fall back on, even if it's been awhile. I also still have his stats and numbers that show he's still very much as dominant despite not being able to see it first hand.

Unlike all these negative posts and tweets that have nothing to back them up with any validity whatsoever.

I hope we land Will Smith for the right reasons. And as an added bonus and fallout, the jokes will just write themselves.

I’m sure a satirist like @OldCraig71 will be chomping at the bit.

Bias always existed but the writing was still better, and informing the public was still more of a central goal. No one expects a newspapers to be an academic paper, but it was more "serious" than the newspapers of today.

Try to find a "politically neutral" newspaper today. Good luck.

All we have left is basically two sides finding ways to spew their propaganda.

I guess the polarization of society and plummeting profit of medias explain this.

Media conglomerates are the main issue there. Postmedia owns basically all the newspapers across Canada and they are heavily biased towards the conservative side. Similarly in the US Sinclair owns local news stations in all markets all over the country. These corporations should be illegal.

Dear HFHabbers,

Matvei is enjoying life and looking like a boss under the Saudi sun, we love to see it.

Pay no attention to the media pundits they are being fed chicken feed in order to keep them guessing.

Vines historians have no doubt this is one of the best to come out of Russia in years. Late 2004 and aging like fine wine he should be ready in about 3 years, it's worth the wait.

Your sommelier,

Nick Bobrov

Qatari won't love you...

Unless one of the center falls yes, they should.

Reinbacher should be at the bottom of our list at 5. IMO it's a wasted opportunity, for more pressing needs. We need more skill upfront, and I'm not sold at all on his ceiling, despite having a solid floor as a NHL dman.

We're not going to draft this high again for awhile, now is the time to get some elite offensive upside talent upfront, while we can.

A 5th OA pick should never be based on needs. If Reinbacher is the BPA on their list, that’s who they should go for even though we don’t have a majority of currently available rankings supporting that position.

Sure if they actually believe he is their BPA, they can do as they plese. I am just of the opinion he's not even close to being that. As for needs the habs have plenty. I would suggest a top 4 dman would be the least of them though.

When you reach for needs on an early pick, you end up with the likes of KK.

The idea is to secure maximum value with that early pick, no matter where it lies. If the asset is redundant, it only means that you can consolidate that value via a subsequent trade.
