Good lord this is so dramatic.

I mean, you're not immune to overdramatization yourself, if we're being honest here waffledave lol

He's there for the taking. Hopefully Hughes and Gorton and the scouting staff know how to read talent. If they really want him, they can trade with Columbus to draft him. Columbus doesn't want him. They want a center, which they'll get at 5 (Carlsson or Smith) if we agree to take Michkov at 3.

Intriguing idea. But I don't buy that Columbus sees Carlsson = Smith. I think they're dead set on Carlsson. Smith is a project, Carlsson is pretty much ready to go. They want him to play with Gaudreau right away.

The closer to the draft we are, the sicker to my stomach I get.

This is a catastrophe waiting to happen. Hell, it already happened.
This time last year we were all absolutely convinced that the Habs were going to take Wright because we had a hole at center and it was the obvious slam dunk choice with the draft in Montreal and the home crowd wanting him. We all assumed they would have leaked stuff to prepare the fanbase for anyone other than Wright going at #1, and they didn't. I feel like I need to make that very clear. This same front office had a #1 overall pick with the draft held in Montréal and a fanbase/general public that were convinced CHL Exceptional Status player and Hockey Canada golden boy Shane Wright was the clear #1 choice to fill a 30+ year hole at the most important position in hockey, and they did not indicate they were going to pick Slafkovsky until minutes before the pick itself despite having the first pick of the draft at home with a fanbase excited to pick Wright.

If you think we are going to get accurate information from these guys about their opinion on Michkov when they're picking FIFTH in the draft and directly behind San Jose who are obviously in for a long-term tank job, I have a bridge to sell you. There will be tons of people in here trying to compare this decision to Galchenuyk or Kotkaniemi or Slafkovsky for some reason over the next month, freaking out about curses, risk-averse decisions, or using whatever other logic to whip themselves into a frenzy about hypothetically not taking Michkov. All of this speculation will be vague guesswork at best. The Habs have not even begun their final meetings or begun finalizing their lists, yet people are already convinced we're taking someone else and going chicken little over hypothetically passing on a guy who may not even be available at 5 a month from now!

We won't know until the day of the draft, and potentially even a few minutes before our pick. There is no point freaking out about it right now. Hughes is not going to come out and say

"Hey everyone! We, the Montréal Canadiens, have invested our immense resources in evaluating this situation and have decided that we are absolutely certain to pick Matvei Michkov in the 2023 draft if he is available to us, but pretty please San Jose Sharks do not pick him because we just want him so bad!!!!!"

The draft is unpredictable, what if Hughes comes out and declares he's 100% taking Michkov at 5, and then Smith goes at 3 and San Jose surprises everyone and takes Reinbacher at 4, leaving a choice between Michkov and Carlsson? There is no upside for the Habs to show their hand, there is so much uncertainty in this draft and the Habs benefit from being ambiguous about their plans. Chicago's front office has been more candid about prospects because their choice is obvious, but the other teams are not going to give anything beyond vague platitudes. Anaheim likely isn't even 100% locked in on Fantilli yet!

I don’t think Carlsson is ready to go. He could very well stay another year in the SHL or AHL.

CB and Fantilli are the only ones ready to go the rest are for sure up in the air. I don't like Carlsson that much anyways, looks like a big uninspired lunk out there, I don't think his game translates to much more than a thrid liner. Come at me!

You're missing the point. The point is that Michkov won't be available at 5th.

More ready to go than Smith in any case.

Losing the most exciting forward we could've had since Guy Lafleur.

Michkov.
Michkov might not make it to 5. The more news comes out, the less I think he slips.

A funny scenario (for SJ) would be the Habs give Flo 1st to move up. Habs grab Smith and SJ grabs Michkov (which would have been their guy all along…)

But, in any event, with everything we have been seeing, if he makes it passed 5, it is unacceptable.

Habs fans need to message Habs HuGo on passing Michkov:

This is what I meant. They f***ed up by not tanking harder when it mattered.

I'm more and more convinced they'll pick him if he's there at 5th.

But he won't.

One player can't change a team. But if you want a winner, you need elite players.
But isn’t that supposed To be the definition of a “game changing talent” is?

Because Price sure as hell did…oh yeah I forgot goaltending doesn’t matter it can be found anywhere…

I agree that Columbus probably sees Carlsson as higher than Smith. But, speculation from Columbus media is that they are very high on Smith's flash, skill, and hockey senses.

Either way, we have to give them a package to make up for the gap. Pieces they may want include Beck (close to NHL ready himself), Florida 1st, and Mike Matheson. They are actively looking for a top 4 LD.

Then this is even more overdramatic. If Michkov goes to Columbus or San Jose and we "have" to walk away from this draft with Leo Carlsson or Will Smith it's ludicrous to call that a catastrophe.

It is a catastrophe.

Michkov is head and shoulders above those guys in talent.

Even if I want Michkov… I can live with Smith. That’s not the problem. The problem, IMO, is if Michkov drops to 5 and the Habs pass on him.

Michkov dropping is looking less and less likely though but we will see.

Isn’t that redundant and implicit?

It’s your stock in trade by now. :sarcasm:

What if we end up with a Rudy as our 1st pick, what then? :propeller

This team has been trying to win the cup with woke smurfs for 25 years, do you really think it will change with a new GM but the same old boys owning the team? If there was a smurf in the top 3 last year they would have grabbed him!

I don’t agree with you on the 3rd line thing lol i think he has high potential but yeah he is not my favorite of the bunch either.

Habs keepin it real which is odd because you're usually so reserved about most things.:sarcasm:
