They were already rotating guys in the press box at the time and had waived Rem Pitlick, who they had signed as a UFA at the beginning of the year.

They were not, even though I'd have waived Drouin's ass, waiving their veteran players to take on a reclamation project at that time.
I would have preferred Tolvanen to Dadonov, Hoffman, Drouin, Armia, Dvorak, Pitlick, Tierney (I know he wasn’t on the team yet), etc.

I find it just a weird handling.

The best way to explain it, would be that they didn't feel the value of adding Tolvanen to the team, at the time where they had already waived Pitlick and were moving people in and out of the line-up with regularity - was higher than the potential return in a trade if they could get those veterans back on track.

I have to think they didn't know what Tolvanen or Valimaki would do. Otherwise, they would have grabbed them for free, irrespective of the washed-up vets currently on the roster.

You're missing the point of my little tongue-in-cheek comment.
Patrick Roy was pushing Grigorenko to Montreal hard in the media because he was from his Remparts (I'm sure I don't need to remind you that if you're from Québec city). Roy was also part of the people interviewing for Habs GM in May 2012 just before that draft. In Montreal he would have been GM, not coach, so he would have actually had a say in the draft process.
Of course he was hyping his player like every other junior coach would do in front of the media

I remember one thing though, he did made a big push for MacKinnon when he arrived in Colorado. A lot where liking the big local defensemen in Seth Jones and since they already had Duchene and ROR but Roy wanted Nate

If that is the case, isn’t that a problem?

I think that's quite the leap to make. They probably weren't sure, as many teams wouldn't be and when you are running with a rotation that is not allowing all your rookie defenseman to play at once, you're not adding another name to that.. similarly to up front.

They are working very hard on creating a culture where people want to come and be part of the team. Jettisoning players, veteran players, under contract to take someone off waivers isn't the best way to build a culture.

Ultimately, taking a player off waivers isn't worth the other impacts on the culture, a team, and a group of people working together to achieving a goal.

To you and your own inexplicable personal agenda against the irrepressible reign of tyranny purpotrated by our new overlord GM's?
Absolutely yes!
Hughes was supposed to know when he traded for Dadonov, that the Preds would end up waiving Tolvanen months later.

Of course, we'd still have Shea Weber's contract on the books but when you're dealing in fantasy...anything is possible.

Can we all just agree that basically everyone wants to take Michkov at 5 and any discussion of other players is inherently talking about a scenario where the Habs decide to pass due to concerns about the political situation and not people saying they "should" pass on him?

It's just getting really frustrating reading all these posts about "how could people possibly want to pass on this guy". Basically nobody in here "wants" to pass on him, we just are discussing other players because there is a possibility that the front office decides to pass in which case we'll be looking at alternatives. It's just a waste of time to have to keep clarifying that very obvious fact over and over and over as if people are seriously sitting here saying they want to pass on Michkov to draft Leonard because of on-ice talent.

Several things were done...just clearly not as perceptible to you.

Aren't you the one whose assumed that trading Player X = more losses = 1st overall pick?

You're projecting.

He's been consistent with his actions since day 1 he took over. He hasn't sacrificed the future to go after quick fixes or to try to salvage the playoffs.

The actions you're suggesting he should have done, with all due respect, aren't rooted in reality, at least not IMO. But you're certainly entitled to your opinion

Except no team in the 8-12 range would.

So...it's fantasy.
Not a forced trade so in my book, roll with a big ask.

Certainly Anderson for a late first isn’t worth it. Somewhere ‘tween 14th to 20ish.

If Wideman is in the rotation, Valimaki could have been. Plus we had 4 rookies, not all of whom needed to be in the NHL right away.

We were in 12th place at the time. Management is justified in bringing in a new player to the rotation. And if it's about the crap vets, Ylonen was called up december 11th, the very day Tolvanen was claimed. Could have just let Ylonen keep progressing in Laval and inserted Tolvanen.

The closer to the draft we are, the sicker to my stomach I get.

This is a catastrophe waiting to happen. Hell, it already happened.

Anderson really had a good last two thirds of the season.

I was in favor of trading him before that. But I'd like to see if he can keep playing well like that for a full season. He played really well with RHP. Hope they play together all year.

Losing the most exciting forward we could've had since Guy Lafleur.

Michkov.
He's there for the taking. Hopefully Hughes and Gorton and the scouting staff know how to read talent. If they really want him, they can trade with Columbus to draft him. Columbus doesn't want him. They want a center, which they'll get at 5 (Carlsson or Smith) if we agree to take Michkov at 3.
