I swear... if we pick Leonard or Reinbacher or anyone NOT top 5 consensus, I will flip my shit.

Remember how well Kotkaniemi turned out for us, since we were too smart for BPA consensus? "Ew, avoid Tkachuk, he sucked with Boston University".

It's one of Bedard, Michkov, Fantilli, Carlsson, Smith. That's it. No others.

You can go which ever side of the argument you want with hindsight posts like this. In 2019, the consensus top 5 went as expected on draft day. The #3-5 picks of Dach, Byram and Turcotte teams missed out on Seider, Cozens and Zegras. Do you want the next Turcotte ?

Imagine if someone took Stutzle 1st overall in 2020

Like it was borderline heresy to pass on Puljuju in 2016...

"Another Finn, big hard-shooting, strong-skating winger Jesse Puljujarvi, completed TSN's Big Three of this draft by securing nine of 10 third-place votes. That trio is a cut above the rest of this draft class. Not one prospect other than Matthews, Laine and Puljujarvi was ranked in the top three in our survey."

I travelled to Krefeld to watch Stützle in 2019, and he was just incredible. This was early in the season when he was still just a top 10 prospect. I still didn't have the guts to put him higher than where he went.
Good catch! Stories like this are starting to make me wonder if the idea of putting prospects into tiers is more trouble than it's worth. It's becoming increasingly clear to me that prospect tiers combined with stylistic stuff (eg. in the top X picks you "need" to be flashy, writing guys off for not being the right type of player stylistically) create some cognitive biases that might not be worth the convenience they provide.

Puljujarvi above also a good example where he was put in a clear top 3 tier to the extent that Dubois was considered a reach, and now 7 years on that feels pretty silly.

We would have needed a GM who knew how to trade a Dman for a C.

Because the drafted dcore also had Streit and Emelin, and Markov was good until at least 2016-2017, and the backup goalie was Halak. Plus the Petry trade.

Markov Subban
McDonagh Petry
Emelin Streit

Price
Halak

Pretty sick back end

Well he did trade Sergachev for Drouin but that failed and in hindsight and by watching Sergachev put up 65pts seasons in Tampa....he got bent over pretty badly on that one lol

"Yeah, he's a great player, probably my favorite in the draft after Lafreniere. High IQ, all kinds of skills and he can already run a PP in a pro league filled with 25-33 year olds.

I'm positive he'll be a Senator however. He or Raymond, two guys I think have elite skillsets."

Gotta love that Andrei79 scouting. Even nailed who would draft him back in February.

Just ignore all of my brutal takes.

Bruhhh! A GM that makes one bad trade in 10 years is a decent GM in my eyes...
He only did lateral move. So as much as he did not have really any bad trade, he also had nothing more than a few good trade. He had no vision, no plan.

The man inherited 2 free buy out, prime Price, Subban and Pacioretty. Gallagher, a 3rd overall, 30YO Plekanec and Markov.

And with the inheritance he had, he did not took any f***ing risk to add to them. Only players acquired on the cheap that were not moving the needle.

Every year it's the same thing, people overanalyze draft lists all season long and get fixated on a "concensus order" that only exist in their mind. Professional scouts absolutely don't care and will only pick who they prefer. They didn't get that job by following what the pundits say.

I liked Lafreniere, Quinn, Reichel, Lundell and Mercer. I have all of them in my keeper league except Lundell. Lost him and filled with Jarvis.

These aren't really comparable situations, and this kind of cherry picking goes both ways. Remember how well Zadina turned out for Detroit, who was able to snag a consensus BPA (who most on this board wanted to take at 3) at 6th overall? There just isn't really any comparison between KK and Leonard or Reinbacher or Benson as prospects, and there's even less similarity between Smith and Tkachuk (if anything Leonard is the closest thing to a "Tkachuk" pick where you're valuing pro traits over flash and numbers). That doesn't mean I think they're all guaranteed to be better either, I just don't think there's any real similarities between the situations. We may as well compare Drouin and E. Lindholm or any other random two prospects to support whatever point either of us feel like making.

Reinbacher is not a "mediocrity" pick. I have no idea where this idea that he has a low ceiling is coming from. We just watched Jeff Petry and Shea Weber play as top pair defencemen for the better part of a decade and neither player is what anyone would call "dynamic", yet when drafting for the future we're writing off anyone that isn't just doing dipsy doodles in the CHL? You are asserting a "tier" drop that isn't actually there and getting upset about "mediocrity" based on a flawed premise. Smith is a very good prospect and I will be absolutely thrilled to have him, but he is not some rock solid slam dunk that is a clear tier above Reinbacher, Benson, or possibly even Leonard in my opinion. FWIW I would personally have Smith 2nd behind Reinbacher if Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson, Michkov end up being the first 4 picks, I really like him a lot I just don't see him as a tier above personally.

I don't get this line of argument with Reinbacher specifically, because the numbers are there with him! It's not even like Reinbacher is one of those "you have to trust the scouts" guys, even if you're just stat watching and haven't watched a second of his tape, he put up 22P in 46 games playing 1st pair minutes in a legitimate pro league as a draft eligible defenceman with size (in the same league where Josi had 8P in his draft year).

I think it's all a moot point anyway. I am extremely doubtful that the Habs would pass on Smith if he's available and that's fine. Michkov we'll see, but I don't think we'll have any way of knowing where they sit on him before the draft actually happens and they would not be passing on him for on-ice reasons anyway so I'm just not going to bother getting wound up about it.

season ticket holders won't respond kindly to drafting a D, they don't pay big money to watch D, they want goals. You can sign and trade for D, but in the top 5 there's no good reason to take a blueliner this year. If there was a no question franchise #1 D, sure, but not over smith or Mitchkofffffffff

Yes but Ghule at 19 was a steal. He looks like a 10 or a 7th.

Unless the franchise D label gets thrown around, scouts are all over the place on Ds. Why was Hamrlik drafted at 1OA and Gonchar the same year as a mid-first rounder?

Did I hear anyone say Reinbacher was a sure-fire 1A? No. Than you don’t pick him at 5OA in an offence heavy draft.

With Ghule you got a bona fide 7thBPA drafted at #19. Furthermore, the added intelligence we now have on Ghule tell me odds are stacked in his favor he’ll have a better career than an 18 year old Reinbacher that doesn’t have fall off your chair skills.
