The Athletic posted their new mock draft this afternoon, which was done by Corey Pronman and Scott Wheeler.

1. Chicago - Bedard
2. Anaheim - Fantilli
3. Columbus - Smith
4. San Jose - Carlsson
5. Montreal - Leonard
6. Arizona - Reinbacher
7. Philadelphia - Dvorsky
8. Washington - Michkov
9. Detroit - Benson
10. Blues - Willander

29. Montreal - Cristall
37. Montreal - Hrabal

Reinbacher at 5 would be a huge disappointment. The draft to get a dman is next year. This year we have a shot at a top line center. How do we keep boofing these chances?

I don't think we will have a shot at a top line center. Unless you think Dvorsky is a top line center, I don't.

You're looking at a winger with the Russian uncertainty, Dvorsky as described above, Reinbacher on D or Leonard as the bull dog complementary winger.

That’s exactly what I’m afraid of.

Even if the Habs want Michkov I would trade the 5th pick to Arizona for Cooley but Arizona would never do that.
Why? How? The top 5 picks of this draft would have gone first overall last year so that’s horrible value.

think that the Draft flavor on this board was to pick best player available ? it doesn't fit with the "this year is forwards, next is dmen, no ?

This is also EXACTLY how I see that. Though I WOULD go Benson...I doubt we do that.

Now...let's start a campaign about how bad Fantilli is at the Worlds...so that he falls at 5....lol
i agree on both suggestions

Remember that if Michkov falls to 5, there's a reason. The guy is supposedly the best thing ever so if 4 other teams pass on him, you need to ask yourself why.
Same with the selection of Wright last season.Fans are still telling he was the BPA when in the end he felt to the 4 th pick if i am correct

We didn’t go through that season of crap just to end up with a complementary player. If we have to do that, trade the damn pick and find another Dach. Or pay the price and move up. Hughes wanted those extra regular season wins now pay up to get a better pick.

Um . . . no. Cooley is a fabulous player, better than Smith and possibly Carlsson as well, and with the uncertainty of Michkov, would probbaly go no lower than 3 this year.

Why would that mean Montreal would be getting a complementary player?

How does there appear to be a lack of support for drafting Michkov?

After the draft lottery Hughes merely said at this point Michkov would lose a tie breaker, but they still have to do a deep dive into the Russian factor and a deep dive into how the candidates actually stack up against each other.

He didn't say how many candidates there are, but he said now that they know where they're picking they know who to focus on, and that that list is certainly less than 10. And he said now that they know they're picking 5th, they'll do the serious deep dive into Michkov. So he's clearly on that list of players they could pick - at least if Hughes's comments can be taken at face value and he wasn't making those comments to deceive teams that potentially would want to trade up or down for the 5th pick so as to not show his hand.
Or he wants to shows his willingness to draft him with the wish that it could encourage another of the 4 first team to select Mitchkov, so he won't need to and will get one of Carlson or Smith ?

I've got to be sincere with you folks. Since the lottery, not a day goes buy that I don't happen to think about a potential selection of Will Smith, and it always fills me with some sort of disappointment. Smith has one of the highest, if not the highest bust-factor among the projected top 8-10. The ceiling is really damned good, but I would feel way more confident with Benson for example, who I believe would comfortably be a top-5 prospect in everyone's eyes if he was a couple inches taller. At the same time, you could also argue that the "aiming for the stars" method is what the Habs should do.

Everyone wants Brady Tkachuk and Cutter Gauthier who went 5 last year as a late riser is showing out at the Worlds.

It sucks that we didn't get top 3 but no one is trading a top 3 pick in this draft and Michkov signed his stupid contract.

What can you do? Hope San Jose takes Michkov. That's it. Or pay them to swap but I'm not sure I'm giving up the goalie of the future (our 2nd round pick) to move up 1 spot for Smith. As much as I like him

I find it hard to see us taking another center. We have what? 6 in the pipeline with top9 written all over them?

Suzuki, dach, Monahan, evans, kidney, Roy, are all top 9 centres. Plus you have several other prospects that could hit. Our best bet is to take the best winger/D available or I guess take another C ?
And there is Drouin that could play center
:sarcasm:

I was responding specifically to the complementary player characterizations contained in @WeThreeKings ’ post. Your assessment may vary.

There may be other ways to go without giving up on the late first rounder or second round pick. It’s all conjecture anyway but it just is never easy or obvious for us.

One more month to go before we can finally stop overanalyzing every tweet and mock draft that comes out, the wait and uncertainty are excruciating.

I'm preparing for the worst but I'll still be livid if Michkov is the best player left at 5 and they don't take him.

For what it's worth, he's had a really strong 2nd half. A lot of scouts have been saying he might warrant being drafted even higher.

I don't know how much it's been brought up on this board but there's a rumor going around that he's close to signing a 2 year deal with SKA so instead of 3 years from now it would be 5. No clue how true it is but if it is he will drop for sure imo.
I said it previously, if ever he signs 2 other seasons, it's because he wouldn't be on the first NHL entry level contract rules. So if he stays in Russia, he will make a lot more money then from the ELC .

It's worth waiting till the '26 - '27 to have Michkov. If we can be patient we will be getting a superstar. All good things come to those who wait. What's the rush?

Right.

Galchenyuk’s per minute numbers were head and shoulders above everyone else’s including Max. And yet our idiot coach kept him on the third line. Meanwhile we sunk to the bottom of the standings and couldn’t score for our lives. MT took all kinds of heat for this.

We fell out of it and THEN he put in Chuck. Chuck went on to be a top ten score in the NHL for the rest of the year.

Dumbest shit ever. Therrien is a complete moron.

How you think you’re helping his case here is beyond me.

And yet he was our best scorer. And by far our best center. And yet instead of playing him (or trading him) we chose to play a center who was inferior in every way.

Totally stupid and inexcusable.

Anyways - this is the draft thread. Let’s move on. I’ll be happy to rip the shit out of Therrien in another thread.
Yet Crosby, Letang, Malkin had no issues “developing” and performing under the same idiot coach?

I don't care about their evaluation of Michkov, if they think their is a risk, pass on him and Michkov turn into a better player than the one we picked, it will be a huge mistake.

They better make the right choice, it's their job.
