The decision making process of current ownership has been so dysfunctional sometimes that I believe that they’ll either blow it by not drafting Michkov if still available. And if by a miracle, they put their thinking cap for a whole second and draft Michkov, they’ll blow it too. For example, not giving him pointers to deal with Montreal media who’ll try to get quotes from him in Russia. Or some other f*** up. I just have a feeling of imminent doom about the whole thing. Lol
This is PTSD from the Bros Club era. I have more hope that the HuGo regime - you know, the ones who decided to change course from Bergevin and hire analytics people and skills coaches - will be more forward thinking. "Sometimes lack of development is on the player" is thankfully a past indictment, not a current or future one.

San Jose just seems all in on Russian players. They traded for 2 from New Jersey in the Meier trade, and signed a bunch more. Michkov fits well within their rebuild timeline. He'll also be a superstar who will bring fans in, put them on a national stage & make them tons of money. Smith is a really good player, but Michkov is better.

Michkov knows he'll make more money in the US then he ever could in Russia.

The "can't be signed" threat is ridiculous. He can be signed to an ELC right after being drafted. The first 2 years slide as a U20 then he gets loaned to KHL for his 3rd year there, and comes over after that season with 2 years left on his ELC.

On top of that there's been more than a dozen Russian players signed this off-season.

Toronto just signed their 6th round pick from 2021 goaltender Vyacheslav Peksa, without controversy.

It's just Montreal fans who feel the need to agonize over this shit. This isn't apparent in other Fan groups.

It's the media brewing their usual pathetic rumors and people gobble it up.

Michkov will make 100+mil in his career and a good chunk of that will get transfered into the Russian economy when he comes back. Putin would be a fool to block him.

I’m still waiting for one of these media pundits to explain to me what makes Michkov a DND for us but not other teams.

Like what is this based on?

On making up for their low ratings/viewership because the Habs are out of the playoffs.

Michel Therrien spent five years making sure Galchenyuk doesn’t play his own game. Not sure you want to count that one.
I’m simply saying we had a great offensive player. He wasn’t great defensively but he could score. We simply didn’t let him play his game.

Same thing was happening to Caufield before Mumbles got canned.

Unbelievable, missing out on a prospect of this caliber by 1 spot just to win a few extra meaningless games.

What a f***ing joke of an organization.

"You can't lose in Montreal"

"gotta protect the winning culture"

Yeah, right.
Not sure what else the team was supposed to do. They finished 8-10 points higher than the other four teams. That's pretty hard to make up. With all of the injuries they used numerous AHL guys who never should have gotten a sniff of the NHL. They played the shit out of Wideman, Hoffman and Drouin and the other useless vets when they were available.

And the Habs finished 3-7 in their last 10 and were getting thumped on the regular. It's not like they made some late season push that pushed them out of the running, or they lost out on 3rd or 4th overall by a point or two. The Habs got six points out of 20 for the last 10 games. For context, the Teams from 8th worst (Wash) to worst (Ana): Wash (6) Phi (7) Arz (4) Mon (6) SJ (7) Chi (5) CBJ (6) Ana (2). Everybody at the bottom of the standings was bad.

And for further context, let's say the Habs brought Antti Niemi out of retirement for the last 10 games and the Habs went 0-10-0. They STILL would have finished 5th from the bottom.

Just be happy they managed to out-tank the clearly tanking Coyotes and kept the 5th spot.

The brain is the most powerful supercomputer & never makes mistakes - it’s the erroneous inputs that output errors.

Galchenyuk like AKos, Beaulieu possessed the intellectual capacity and hunger to learn of a turnip.

MSL was constantly bitch slapped till age 25 yet possessed the inner fortitude & hunger to bear down & push through - adapting & constantly learning.

Can’t fix stupid….

I'm sick of the Michkov talk and while I'd love for us to get him, I also know that there must be an absolute fear for him to take a massive KHL deal in 3 years rather than go entry level in the NHL.

By then, it's safe to say he'll be a top 2 or 3 KHL player and getting 10M a year for another 2 or 3 years isn't far fetched. As much as I want the guy, if I think there's a possibility he's not coming here before 2028, I might pass and go for the next best on my list.

I'd need to be 95% sure he's here in 3 years or I'm not taking him, can't really blame a GM that has this POV

Sharks aren't gonna move down, why would they? Let's just be happy to draft 5th and get this rebuild behind us, it's over.
Blue Jackets want a center at 3, they don't want Michkov. If we trade up with it written as part of the trade that we take Michkov, then the Jackets get Smith or Carlsson at 5. Just gotta give them a package that surpasses the gap between Carlsson and Smith. Owen Beck and Matheson are two pieces I think they'd be interested in, plus our FLA 1st.

We're not deep at the RD position. If Reinbacher is truly that #1 RD it wouldn't be a bad thing. I'm not saying that's what they will do, I'm just talking possibilities about that poster's idea. I personally want Michkov but I doubt he will be available. With Suzuki and Dach at center and with Beck coming up, why do we need Smith?

The draft next year is all dmen. No point in reaching to take one this year and definitely not at 5.

He stated he wants to play in the NHL and the big money is here. There's a reason Kaprizov came over, they all dream to play in the NHL like all the Russian Superstars.

I’d buy this except:

We played an inferior player with the same flaws in this spot.

Not only did Chuck produce when used as a number one but the entire team’s offense went way up.

Our coach was an idiot.

Nobody would mistake CC for Bergeron - hence the offense only example - but he was a talented scorer who was infinitely better than DD.

Therrien was so focused on what players couldn’t do that he forgot about their strengths. He didn’t understand skill at all and wanted everyone to play like Prust. Why he felt that DD was a better fit on the first is beyond reason. It was the dumbest shit I’ve ever seen.

It seems to have been a very weak draft on the top end. Wright ended up having a dud-like season, Slafkovsky had a terribly poor season in Liiga despite what the propogandists like to say, and Cooley would've gone 6-10 in the 2023 draft at the highest. Then there is Nemec and Jiricek who had interesting profiles respectively but it's harder to get horny for Euro. defecement prospects unless they're really standout amazing (ie Hedman, etc) and neither fit that profile.

There will be stars and studs who'll emerge from the 2022 draft but it's as much of a crapshoot as we could've ever feared.
You forgot about Kulich at 28 as he is going to be star.

Interesting. Who would you take with Michkov gone? If you really have Wood in the same tier as Smith it would be very hard not to take him I would think...

If he's our guy, gotta trade up for him.

Yeah I'm definitely getting the feeling Michkov is gone by #5 .....

I’m not pos we will land Michkov. If he reassures clubs he’s coming over, he’s long gone before our pick. If doubts persist, he might go out of top 10.

Lol hopefully the 6-7 year contract rumor is what he's telling the teams that he doesn't want to go to but he's telling Kent he'll be here ASAP.
