1. Bedard
2. Fantilli

Set in stone.

From here, Columbus is where it gets interesting.

3. Smith or Carlsson

It’s almost surely one of these two. I’d lean towards Carlsson but i’ve read they’re fairly high on Smith so I could see this one going either way.

4. Carlsson/Smith, or Michkov.

San Jose seems like the first real possibility for Michkov, but I think they’ll strongly consider whoever is left between Smith/Carlsson.

5.

I’d love Michkov, but I just can’t see it happening. This leaves Montreal’s list as follows, in order..

1. Carlsson/Smith (if one is available, have to assume we don’t pass that up).
2. Reinbacher
3. Dvorsky
4. Leonard

These 5 players, in my opinion, are the only ones in play for our pick at 5th overall.

Trades yes, but the track record of team building with UFAs leaguewide is mostly awful.
That would take a lot of my time to delve into that to form an accurate opinion and conclusion,so when an abundance of time is available, perhaps I'll dig in but regardless,Gm's need to be meticulous and thorough when making those type decisions.

Will Smith (5th)
David Reinbacher (6th)
Zach Benson (7th)
Ryan Leonard (9th)

I would not cry out in agony, I would just probably call them wimps for letting some external factors make them pass on, basically, a gift, of a superstar at 5OA.

Reinbacher is the blend of Nemec and Jiricek for me. He isn't a physical defender like Jiricek but he's a better skater. He isn't as smart as Nemec, but has a similar panic threshold and is a better shooter. Jiricek is still the better shooter of the 3 but Reinbacher is no slouch.
I don't dislike Reinbacher but my God would it suck to see this anemic offensive team pick yet another defenseman.

Offense starts from the back-end.. can't just reach on a perceived offensive player if the defenseman is better.

Is what it is.. they should be able to avoid all of this by nutting up and picking Michkov, but that ain't my call.

I know you need defense to help offence but until we get a legitimate threat other than Caufield our offence will continue to be sub 2.0gpg

Curious, should the Habs draft Mitchkov, or any other player that won't be NHL-ready for three plus years, what do you think the Habs should do in the 2024, 2025, and 2026 campaigns? How many more tanks?

You're probably right that his opponents may start to take offence. But me as a fan says, screw them, let the boy play!!

We haven't a player with this kind of panache since Lafleur, with perhaps a slight nod towards Kovalev.
You're probably right. We don't know yet his ceiling or his minimum in nhl level. Maybe Smith or Carlsson could become better players at tha age of 24. I doubt Dvorsky could become a next Barkov. More a new Bonk or Smolinsky. How is the best D? Reinbacher. Future star at D or just meh?

The reality is other than Bedard no other 2023 top-10 pick is NHL ready and other than Fantilli every other pick is at least 2-seasons away.

This is a tough one..I’m glad I don’t have to make this decision

I personally have him 9th on my top 10 list, and would be extremely disappointed if they reached for him at 5. He's a fine Dman, I just think we have a more pressing need for true offensive skill upfront.

I see him as a top 4 dman, others view him higher.

I would be disappointed if they pass on Smith to take Reinbacher.
I would also be disappointed if they pass on Michkov to take Reinbacher, but would understand it better if they deemed the pick is too risky.
They wouldn’t. You take BPA and they said they would and apparently they REALLY like Smith.

Where Reinbacher probably come in to play is if Smith is gone and don’t want Michkov, so they probably have a bunch of players like Reinbacher or Leonard, Benson to look into.

i actually like him and get the logic i just don’t know how many more chance we have at getting high end offensive players
If Carlson/Michkov/Smith are available you 100% take one of those in that order. Then Benson or Leonard. I would take Pellikka over Reinbacher if I wore to go the D route. But never at 5. Be a huge failure and disappointment if we took him at 5.

Between Huston, Matheson, Guhle, Xhekaj, Engstrom, Harris, Trudeau as LHD and Barron, Mailloux, *Reinbacher* as RHD we have the basis of one hell of puck moving, offense generating, chance suppressing and mean defense.

Was playing around with CapFriendly for a potential 2024-2025 roster to assess where the Habs’ most dire positional needs are upon completion of a guesstimative depth chart. [Core; Veterans; Hopefully traded; Rookies]

Centers : Suzuki, Dach, Dvorak, Evans, Beck*, Kidney

Left Wingers : Caufield, Slafkovski, RHP, Ylonen, Heineman, Farrell

Right Wingers : Dach, Anderson, Gallagher, Armia, Roy*, Mesar

Left Defensemen : Matheson, Guhle, Xhekaj, Harris, Hutson*, Engstrom*, Struble

Right Defensemen : Barron, Savard, Kovacevic, Mailloux*

Goalie : Montembault, Primeau, Dobes, Dichow

Considering this, the missing pieces would be:

- RW1/C2 : Depending whether Dach is ultimately used as C2 or RW1.

- RHD1 : Barron/Mailloux have interesting offensive upsides, but they both lack defensive acumen; a true first pairing RHD must thus be found, unless the answer turns out to be using Guhle as RD since the LHD pipeline (Hutson, Engstrom) appears so strong.

- G1 : The answer might be within the organisation as well - Montembault - but the Habs will in any event part ways with Allen sooner than later and finding another solid, perennial option in net is paramount.

And so, as for the upcoming draft, if we compute these needs and the candidates within the #5 range :

- Carlsson : Fills the top-6 C/RW requirement perfectly, enabling optimal top-6 flexibility with Dach.

- Michkov : Fills the elite RW admiradbly and provides, along with Caufield, a lethal 1-2 punch of scoring wingers on the top-6.

- Smith/Dvorsky : Fits the top-6 C need; likely means Dach plays RW.

- Benson/Leonard: Fits the top-6 W need, likely means Dach plays C.

- Reinbacher: Fits the RHD profile sought, likely means Guhle remains LD and that the Habs can engage in further « Romanov-trades ».

My humble conclusion for #5, in order of preference : 1) Carlsson; 2) Michkov; 3) Reinbacher; 4) Smith; 5) Benson/Dvorsky.

And if there’s a Dubois sign and trade deal at the draft (not involving #5 obviously!), then I’d go : 1) Michkov ; 2) Reinbacher.

Sure but then on offense Habs have Caufield…

I really think if they go Reinbacher with Michkov available they are the biggest wimpballs I have seen.

These two words don't work together. Michkov is 3 years away from NHL.... at least.

Anderson should still be considered as a top-six unless RHP or Farrell show otherwise.

I still doubt Hughes will select Michkov.

He could trade pick #5 + Harris for Dubois and Jet's own #1 pick (#18).

And then Molson could fire him for pulling that. Dubois is not worth that.
