Someone please educate me.

1- how long can an NHL team hold the rights to a drafted player?
2- if a player is drafted in the first round and never comes to the NHL, is there a form a compensation?

Let's say we select Michkov and the war in Russia just gets worse and he doesn't come in 3 years or 5 years...or never. What happens then?

I was looking at how many Russians were drafted and came to the NHL during the cold war and that list is not very long lol this isn't the cold war (kind of worse maybe) and i suspect fewer Russians are drafted this year than previously.

There’s interesting quotes in there from NHL scouts.

So the only names there they really liked were Leonard and Dvorsky.

Someone please educate me.

Depends from which league they are drafted.

You get until the end of their NCAA career (usually 4 years can be 5) for American league prospects.

European prospects you get 4 years. I think. Dichow has to be signed this summer.

CHL you get 2 years.

Russia you have rights indefinitely as there's no transfer agreement.

Let Cooley thrive in a small market. Him and the others traded for Matthews would be forever compared. The pressure would be immense.

Having seen the Lindros trade from up close, I know this is not true at all.

"Let professional hockey player have no pressure" --- peak privilege much? Cooley will have some pressure anywhere. In many ways, there is much less pressure in Toronto than Montreal. Look at Matthews himself.

It could be argued that the year leading up to taking Slafkovsky was more of a tear down as HuGo had just taken over and had not yet been able to fully construct and implement their plan. They took over a team that was assembled with the intention of returning to the playoffs and there was no thought of a rebuild built into the construction of the team that they had just inherited. This past season was the first that HuGo had people/systems in place that weren't so tainted by the previous regime and could truly start building hence the grounds for Molson's comment.

Not sure why any of this matters anyways as it is mostly semantics and we needn't try and find fault where it is not to be found.

Well, I don't agree....you don't trade Toffoli if the rebuild is not on to begin with.

Technically, I simply think Molson thinks a rebuild is the progression from a rebuilding team to a contender.

Cheeky lil bugger. I love it!
If he start to score michigan goals like that in NHL, he will spend time on the injury list every year.

Satisfied yes, but still will have a little feeling of disappointment missing out Michkov or Carlsson.

That said Smith would easily be our best prospect.
I'll be happy with Carlsson or Smith.

You're probably right that his opponents may start to take offence. But me as a fan says, screw them, let the boy play!!

We haven't a player with this kind of panache since Lafleur, with perhaps a slight nod towards Kovalev.

I don't we can use the cold war as a comparison, it was a different era with completely different norms.

This pick makes so much sense if they don't want to go the Michkov route.

I think he could also be the pick if they don't want to go the Smith route. There's a lot of history between Hughes and Smith, Hughes could very likely have insight into this player (coachability, personality, entourage, etc.) that makes him want to go another direction.

As much as I like Reinbacher - I hope they trade back a couple spots if they take him.

You don't trade back if you've identified who you want.. you only trade back if you have a tier of players without any separation and are happy with any of them.

Unless of course, the guy you want is just such a massive reach that you don't think anyone would step in.

How would you rank Reinbacher, Smith, Leonard, and Benson?

Would you cry out in agony if the Habs picked Reinbacher with Mitchkov on the board?

How does Reinbacher compare to Nemec and Jiricek?

Will Smith (5th)
David Reinbacher (6th)
Zach Benson (7th)
Ryan Leonard (9th)

I would not cry out in agony, I would just probably call them wimps for letting some external factors make them pass on, basically, a gift, of a superstar at 5OA.

Reinbacher is the blend of Nemec and Jiricek for me. He isn't a physical defender like Jiricek but he's a better skater. He isn't as smart as Nemec, but has a similar panic threshold and is a better shooter. Jiricek is still the better shooter of the 3 but Reinbacher is no slouch.
