Tellement pas. Yakupov's undoing is neatly described by what was commonly said about him. He was like a bee buzzing around without purpose. His undoing was his vision/hockey IQ, or rather lackthereof.
i don't know about tellement pas. I kind of agree with what Scott Howson is quoted as saying about yakupov skating in The Athletic:

“His skating was overrated,” Howson says. “He looked like he was a good skater. He had some quickness. But he was a wide-track skater, so after the first couple of steps it wasn’t special.

“He had busy feet. He was quick enough, but there’s a difference between quickness and speed. He didn’t have much speed. He couldn’t separate like a lot of players can. He wasn’t a big guy, so he needed to be fast. His skating was a little bit misjudged. He certainly wasn’t an elite skater.”

That's what I saw. Anyway, I sincerely hope my concern about michkov is wrong.

If this happens, hard to forgive the brain-damaged decisions taken during this season that robbed us of a Top 4 pick.

Should have tanked way harder.
If they got the 4th pick they would draft Smith anyway and he’s not your choice so what’s the difference other than Smith would be a lock?

In the end, probably the biggest decision that ended up costing us a top 4 pick was trading nothing to get a 1st plus Monahan. Monahan helped make us competitive for almost 1/3 of the season. Petry for Matheson also didn't help.

It is what it is.

I'm cooling down on Smith. I think we have a clear and sexy Top4 and then... not so much. Smith, Benson, et al. are certainly good prospects and have really beautiful aspects to their game but they're not Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson, and Michkov.

It's a shame about Michkov, he will be tantalizingly out of reach for us.

Skating wasn't the problem with Yakupov, he wasn't an elite but his speed was fine and it was not at all an issue. Hockey IQ was the problem as like most good skaters he was unable to enjoy the same advantage in the NHL that he had in the CHL and did not know how to create separation through deception and did not understand how to manipulate pro defenders. He also was slow to read developing plays and defenders were reacting before he knew what was happening. He was basically the anti - O'Relly/Stone/Toffoli who mitigate their poor skating with superior instincts and anticipation.

If we didn't go and break our own record for man games lost we would be drafting outside the top 10 imo. The Matheson trade was a masterful job by Hughes and he will be an integral part of this team's transition to contention.

Yes, that was my point. Aside from the injuries it was two great trades that were bad for the tank - and another great trade, the Dach trade, plus others probably. Can't really complain about great trades. I mean Chicago made a bunch of awful trades and got Bedard. It is what it is.

I'm gonna say that 95% chance that Columbus takes Carlsson and 70% chance that Sharks take Michkov leaving us with Smith.
Nothing wrong with that, either. Smith is really good. He becomes our #1 prospect easily. Top 5 in a strong draft is nothing to sneeze at.

IMO it comes down to the Sharks. I can't see the Ducks passing on Fantilli and I can't see Columbus having the patience to wait 2-3 years for a kid to come over. I can totally see Grier picking Michkov.

I believe were more set at Center than San Jose. Sharks may go need. If they go Michkov, we go BPA which is fine.

I see 1 Bedard 2 Fantilli gap 3 Carlsson 4 Michkov gap 5 Smith 6 Benson gap rest

Not remotely the same players but for argument’s sake: Would your rather Kucherov (Michkov) or Spezza (Smith)? To me the answer is clear.

How I think it will work out :

Outsider here so hopefully not butting in, but I definitely don't think there's any chance Columbus even thinks about Michkov. I don't think they're confident they can bring him over and/or make him happy. For them it's probably Carlsson or Smith IMO.

I think the Sharks might be a different story. I think a California team that can afford to wait for him like the Sharks can is a perfect fit for him. However, if Columbus takes Smith SJ might go for the center in Carlsson, and under that scenario it's you guys that have the real decision to make.

Personally, if I'm Montreal I take Michkov if he's available. I'm confident in my org's history with Russian players, I'm confident that my city is a hell of a lot more European than a random America city, and I'm confident that by the time he comes over my team will be in need of a potential star player on an ELC...and he'd be by far the BPA at that spot. I'd WAY, WAY rather wait for Michkov than overdraft a Reinbacher just because he fits a need in your organization.

Michkov will probably gone at 4. I can see San jose drafting him

That's how I see it. But the fact that McKenzie had Will Smith at 3 on his latest list means things aren't set in stone. McKenzie makes his list exclusively by polling active NHL scouts. So the outcome of the latest poll was Smith at 3.

McKenzie's scouts had Slafkovsky number 1 last year when everyone deep down still thought we would pick Shane Wright.
