The main issue I have is that logically if Smith/Carlsson/Fantilli/Bedard are all of the board then that means there would be no need for a tie breaker because after that the talent gap is too wide.
It'd be like if we won the lottery, but then management made the same statement regarding Bedard. Saying that if they feel someone else is equal in talent he might not be picked due to a tie breaker. Everyone knows he's the clear cut #1 talent, so there's no need to make that statement.
Again the statement was made pre their deep dive into the talent level of the candidates and the deep dive into the Russian Factor. Forget about any indication of his assessment of Michkov's talent level from that statement. It was purely about the Russian factor, in response to a question about the Russian factor.
Even if Hughes thinks Michkov is the clear #2 talent available, he's not going to say it. Remember these public statements are strategic and more used to deceive the competition than give away his cards. He's not going to say, "we really hope Michkov falls to us at 5, because he's the clear cut top talent in the draft after Bedard." That would be stupid to say publicly, especially if that's what he truly believes. In fact if that's what he truly believes, then it would be smarter for him to downplay Michkov's talent and talk up the Russian factor.
