The patch looks like grandma sowed it on. And for me it’s all or nothing, so a bunch of ads or a single ad is the same. As I’m an avid soccer fan, I’m used it, but was always happy the NHL had preserved the jersey. I definitely wont take seriously all of the pass the torch garbage anymore though. We’re just a franchise like any other now. No identity, no respect for tradition. Just the Florida panthers of the north. Maybe it’s for the best and we can let go of all the myth making.
And in the end Edmonton Oilers stood against dishonouring their jersey. They decided "it's 2022 and everyone is doing it anyway" wasn't convincing reasoning. But our tradition tarnishing douche who sits on two guaranteed money makers: brewery and the most storied hockey franchise, was first in line selling advertising space on la Sainte Flanelle.

They are already getting slapped outside the hockey world for partnering up with one of the bank that invest the most in fossil fuel exploitation.

I guess the goal is green as long no one putting another kind of green in your pocket.

@ rocket Richard pic with RBC logo

Get ready. This will be the next real estate sold. Branding iconic pictures and memorabilia.

And then banks can start branding famous artwork. Just a little logo on the top left of the Mona Lisa. Won’t bother anyone and it will be for a good cause like funding orphanages. Who could refuse that. Won’t even notice it after two months.

One thing I’m extremely happy about at this point in my life is that I have no loyalty at all to banks. One gives me a fraction of a percentage point less interest rate, and friendship ended with CIBC, now BMO is my best friend.

It’s not like this sponsorship money is gonna go to reduce ticket prices or the cost of a beer at the Bell Center. This is going straight to Molson’s pocket. But hey, it’s 2022 and the corporations are profiting on everything else. Why should we be upset for them to ruin the tradition/purity of hockey so they can make some extra cheese?

If it’s true that the Oilers aren’t putting ugly ads on their jerseys, Molson should be ashamed doing this to ours. Our jerseys are iconic and should not be touched. I can live with the helmet ad but once you start touching our jerseys… it’s even worse when Molson said he wouldn’t do this years ago.

Which part of hockey is pure exactly? Lol

I don’t like it, one isn’t the end of the world but I would of have it on The sleeve, less apparent. The thing that I will really hate is if the have more than one or some will have really questionable sponsor like online casino site and stuff like that.

I f***ing hate it.
They are starting with a (not so) small logo.
Fans will slowly get used to it then they will add another sponsor..

We'll end up with jerseys full of sponsor patches or jerseys with only one sponsor with its big logo instead of the team logo ( like the Montreal FC BMO atrocity).

It will take quite a few years to get to that but now that they started it will only get worse.

Also...a f***ing bank again ?

That's what we needed...more ads.
It's at a point where I'm expecting ads in my dreams.
You are having a nightmare in which you are being chased by a serial killer. He catch you and just before you wake up you hear "with Nike running shoes you would still be dreaming peacefully. On sale at Sport Experts this week".

Build me a winner is all that really matters at this point. Once upon a time advertising on the boards was considered to be sacrilege.

It is permissible for fans to say that the uniform of their favourite team is not something they want covered with a hideous colour clashing banking logo without being sneered at like children who believe Santa Claus is real.

Everyone is aware that life will go on and that this is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it sucks, it is ugly, it is garish, it is specifically designed to draw your eye to the advertisement, it will never go back to the way it was before, and it will only get worse in the future. This f***ing sucks, there is zero positive to it as a fan, and I don't understand why it is somehow wrong for fans to react negatively and/or emotionally.

The entire reason pro sports survives as a business is because fans connect emotionally with the product.

Nobody connects more emotionally to a sport than soccer fans. Look at their kits.

For the most part, those that hate it are going to see it as a nuisance , but I highly doubt most people are going to care enough to do anything meaningful about it (ie. A mass drop in viewership and sales).

I don't particularly care for it either, but it's not affecting my emotional investment. My investment gets affected most when the players mail it in, like they did for an extended period under ducharme.

This actually goes against you. You are making a big deal of a small issue while ignoring all the bigger ones. You're closer to well guy.

Sorry, I have to acknowledge all the “big issues” before commenting on the “small ones”? Who makes these rules, lol.

And you say this on a message board dedicated to discussing a hockey team that regularly contains GDT threads calling half the team garbage. How much narrower of a subject matter can you get?

I guarantee I’m being way more measured and respectful than those posting in game threads. And the point isn’t really that controversial. The badge looks terrible and it ruins an iconic jersey. Let people discuss it in peace. End of story.
