yeah.. a "meaningless game" where they clinched a trip to the finals and made Canada's future uncertain. How do tournaments work?

Sorry, I should correct myself.

Meaningless to Canada*

It was plenty meaningful to the US as they wouldn't advance to the Finals if not for it. Canada knew they were beating Finland. They wouldn't have held Makar out if it was an elimination game - he was a game-time decision.

"When Makar was out: It means nothing, part of the game.
When McAvoy is out: Unfair, we're injured."

That's a strawman - nobody is making that argument.

If nobody is making any argument then it's not a strawman.

These are just the tests the U.S team has to meet. I remember that loss in 96 with no Mario, Kariya, Macinnis or Bourque and not a single U.S fan thought any less of the win, it's considered their biggest win after the miracle on ice to this day.

U.S fans have been pretty vocal about being the new boss in town, this is one of the challenges the new C.E.O has got to succeed in.

It's part of being in the elite category, fans of other teams don't care what players they are missing, they are all gunning for you injuries or no injuries or no shows.

Comes with the territory.

It's been beaten to death but I'd feel so much more confident about this game if we have anyone other than Binnington in net

Maybe he develops a cough or something and we can bring in Thompson or Kuemper

Quinn Hughes is joining Team USA.

The NHL is making up the rules as it goes. If you're allowed to bring in reinforcements someone call Pietrangelo.

I am curious what other American defensemen is injured? We had to be down to 5 before they reluctantly let us have Harley lol Americans lose one defensemen and Hughes is allowed to be air dropped into the tournament no restrictions?

Pietrangelo declined , hughes was hurt, different situations

Pietrangelo claimed to be hurt while playing 30 mins a night. Likely because he thought it was a glorified all-star game.

His opinion might have changed after watching the 1st CAN-US game. So he can now pretend to be healed.

True enough but wasn't quinn named on the team and pietro was not?

Interesting if Hughes will be able to play or just as a fill in if a D other than MacAvoy is hurt.
Hughes will play in the finals. It will be announced that Sanderson (or another D) is banged up or has an illness before Thursday.

That's what happens when the NHL creates loopholes; organizations find way ways to exploit them almost instantly. What they offer to one party in good faith will be abused by others under the guise of "equality."

If the outcome is that the US has a much more entertaining, skilled, better and more marketable player in the game, it's hard to really fault their decision-making.

What is the actual goal of this tournament? To showcase the world's best players against one another?

All of these silly substitution rules just get in the way of the overall objective.

The downside is that, unlike everyone else on the ice, Hughes will not have practiced or played with the team. So there's a little risk there, a risk I'm sure the US would love to take on if they could.

Every player needs to sacrifice out there and compete like there is no tomorrow.

Do that and the U.S can bring in anyone they want, you win and lose as a team.

His puck handling vs Finland was spectacular, which is one positive I'll give him.

The NHL should have simply allowed each team to carry 25 players on their roster (14 F, 8 D, 3 G), like they did for the 2014 Olympics. I know why they didn't - they (the NHLPA) didn't want their players foregoing a winter break to join a team and waste their time by not actually dressing for any games - but I think that could have been overcome with some sort of rule that each player had to dress for at least one game in the tournament. That way, there would have been none of the weirdness about Harley joining Team Canada (and now, Hughes joining Team USA)

Well, he's in as a potential injury replacement if another defenceman is injured or sick.

Which, judging by the tournament thus far, isn't a huge barrier to circumvent.

Ya I’d imagine the hardest part was getting Hughes to “join” the team, and that is done now. Reporting their 6th D is “injured” is the easy part, and Hughes will play on Thursday .
