Point is such a smart player.
Yes. It was nice to see him getting into the action today.

Outside of Goal in 3 on 3 goal with all that extra room, Marner has been absolutely invisible. One of the reasons the Leafs struggle so much in the playoffs is because he needs to be a top player in those games and he just rarely ever is. Come at me all you want but it’s true. He’s not built for this.
He was only given 12 minutes today. Perfect amount of time for him.

Because Binnington gave up another softie.

Again.

I won't blame him for the other goals but every game he gives up an easy one. It's killing us.
The first goal Binnington gave up, is one a Starting Goaltender in this critical game needs to make. The man has given up soft goals in every single game. That first Finland goal gave this team life, and Canada almost chokes this game away without the heroics of Crosby.

Hopefully we do not need see Binnington's name mentioned as one of the three goalies in the 2026 Olympics after his performance so far. Thompson, Blackwood and Hill all should be in the running over this guy. Canada needs to win against the USA despite Binnington.

Exactly.

He's let in stoppable pucks and that's okay. Every goalie does that. The two on one vs the Americans for example was stoppable but not what I'd consider soft.

The first one tonight? That can't go in. It especially can't go in when you have done this three times in the previous two games. And yes, it was a 4-0 game at the time but as we all saw that huge lead turned into a nailbiter with about a minute to go.

Canada basically has to assume that Binnington's going to give up at least one soft goal and compensate for it. It's a huge disadvantage. We should've beaten Sweden in regulation. He gave up two soft goals in that game. Against the US it was one and that cost us the game. We escaped any consequences today but it almost took a crazy turn.

I'm not suggesting they replace him now but he can't be the goalie next time around. He's made some nice saves but the softies are killing us.

Great post. He has given up a softie every game, hasn't he?

...two against Sweden...one against the US (although the other was stoppable) and one against Finland (and he totally misplayed the 2nd and looked like a land-bound trout)...HE has been and continues to be our main disadvantage in the Tournament...he and Jon Cooper...

Maybe he's due for a BIG game?

As another poster said... For Canada "it's time to win one".

There is no way Binnington isn't starting Thursday unless there's some injury or illness. Similarly, there is no way that there are any roster changes without an injury or illness as you don't make a change with a winning roster unless you're forced to.

Would also like to add that the 2nd goal is one that Binnington should have stopped, along with the 1st one, as his over sliding led to him being out of position and having to come back into the net, leaving his 5 hole open.

Reinhart, Marner (outside of the one goal), Stone (outside of the one goal), Marchand, Konecny, and Cirelli have all been largely absent. No team can win without depth, and for the most part, our depth have been largely absent.

The defense has been ok, but have struggled dealing with a strong forecheck, which the US has a very strong forecheck.

If Canada doesn't win on Thursday, one of the failings of the roster build is going to be heaviness. If you go back to 2010 and 2016, when the tournaments were on NA ice, there was always a line or two that had the ability to be disruptors during and after the play. I think back to the line of Staal - Getzlaf - Perry from 2010 and a few guys from 2016 which also included Getzlaf and Perry along with guys like Thornton, O'Reilly and a couple of others. Going a bit too heavy in 2014 almost did them in.

The thing that made things so special was they were given a role on the team, to be checkers, and they did that role for the good of the team.

This is also where Cooper has failed, and I'll also say the leadership of the team as well. Those teams in 2010, 2014, and 2016, were some of the most laser focused teams. Say what you want about Babcock, but what he and the leadership group were able to do with those guys, to get every single player to buy in to the plan, was what won them those Gold medals and World Cup trophy.

For an NHL players he’s almost hilariously scared of any and all contact

Such little preparation time was probably a big factor in why things appear a little unfocused and disjointed. The team had what…one practice together before the Sweden game? It’s not like the Olympics where the team practices together for a few days before the games start and usually have a few softballs early in the schedule to work out the kinks.

The team will rely on Makar, MacKinnon and McDavid to tilt the ice and win the game on Thursday. The rest of the team, aside from Crosby, is just kind of filler in my opinion. I think the goaltending approach with just rolling out Binnington kind of underlines the lack of a serious plan for this team/tournament. Meanwhile it seems Sullivan and Torts have implemented a more focused approach to to building the American team and actually have a plan for how to win this tournament; comparatively it seems like Cooper is just kind of winging it game to game and will ride or die with his “big 3” (plus Sid).
