yeah.. a "meaningless game" where they clinched a trip to the finals and made Canada's future uncertain. How do tournaments work?

Meaningless to Canada*
It was plenty meaningful to the US as they wouldn't advance to the Finals if not for it. Canada knew they were beating Finland. They wouldn't have held Makar out if it was an elimination game - he was a game-time decision.

That's a strawman - nobody is making that argument.
