Can the Panthers make the playoffs with this blueline?

It's crazy how Zito destroyed a deep roster in less than a calendar year. Impressive stuff. This time last year many of us myself included were commending Zito on an excellent job where it seemed he was winning every trade. Then the trade deadline and off season moves showed up and I don't even know what to say. Just brutal asset management.

Moved out 3 consecutive 1st's, Hubby, Weegar, Tippett and other assets, lost Marchment and the lone asset worth anything remaining is Tkachuk. As good as Tkachuk's been, woof. Major woof.

The worst part is each year those 1st could become more and more valuable approaching each draft as the Panthers window is looking slammed shut. That D-core is thrash. Bob is unmovable. Prospect pool isn't deep. Offensive forward depth is already looking depleted.

This was all Chiarelli level incompetent. Guess, I did have the words after all. Feel bad for the Panthers fans though, they waited forever to win a playoff round only to watch things quickly fall apart yet again.
I guess if time ends after this season, you may be right. FL cap issues go away this summer. Zito will have room to add some players, even with the Bob contract still on the books. People here are so short sighted.
I never liked the chiarot trade (didn’t really like Giroux deal either, everyone knew then that they couldn’t re-sign him for this year.), but it isn’t the end of the world. Panthers should be winning more than they are, and the main problem is that they can’t score. They control play for great stretches but don’t score, they make every goalie look like a vezina winner. The last couple games they’ve started pressing and are turning a lot of pucks over, leading to more odd man rushes against. They often give glorious chances to the other team, and the goalies aren’t bailing them out.

It's been a while since I've seen a goalie like Bob, who can look like an All Star one game, and then an AHL backup the next 2 games. Sure the blueline sucks but the Panthers are not getting + play at all from their goalies. Almost reminds me of the Alex Auld days when Bob is off.

The Staal duo is tanking this team just as bad too. I blame both Zito and PM for bringing Eric Staal back. Marc wouldn't be bad as a #7 defenseman, but the fact both gets decent minutes each game is atrocious.

I think Zito has been good, but too aggressive in acquisitions. It's going to haunt this team with the lack of prospects in the coming years especially if some players currently on the team decline faster than expected.

"Window is slammed shut..."
🥲

Another loss and a losing record on the season. You know things are not good when your coach says publicly he needs a single player to come back and be the savior (Barkov).

Panthers sitting outside of a playoff spot which is a tough spot in the Atlantic where they sit 5th behind Boston, Toronto, Tampa and Detroit.

Not sure they are beating out 2 of those teams, so the question is does Detroit swoop in and take their spot?

NJ, Toronto, Boston are locks. Safe to assume TB and Carolina are locks as well.

So that’s 5 spots gone almost 100% and only 3 left.

Comes down to Pittsburgh, Detroit, NYR, NYI and Florida. Maybe Washington can get back in the mix with a healthier roster.

Of those 6, I think Pittsburgh will make it. So that’s 2 left for NYI, NYR, Detroit And Florida and Washington. I think NYI have an inside track and I’d bet on NYR getting their act together. Too good, especially if they get Patrick Kane.

Wouldn''t say the Leafs are a lock. They're hot right now but have won what 15 of 26? or 16 of 26. Either way that's good and all but in a division like the Atlantic. where the supposed bottom feeders are all getting better, and even cup contending teams people said in the summer are in the middle of the pack, it's just a tough division. We're only 1/4 through. Boston is the only lock so far.

I’d say NJ is too just based on how many points they have banked so far. They will literally have to be worse from here on out than they were last season to miss the playoffs. There may be some regression but hard to see it being that much. Torontos a lock for me to. Same idea but also they have the players to get them there easily

No. Panthers and Caps are gonna be rhe casualties from the resurgence of the Devils and Red Wings.
FLorida and Washington will be on the outside looking in come April.

Boston is a lock, but the Leafs, who as of this post are 3 points behind them are not?

I can't wait to hear this explanation

That Weegar trade looks good now doesn t it?

No, No it doesn't and 1 game doesn't change that

How are the Wings advanced stats? I've watched them a few times, and came away unimpressed. Seems like a team overachieving, and a good candidate to slow down as the season progresses.

The Leafs are the definition of a lock, 28 games into the season they're on pace for 117 points. To reach 100 points on the year the Leafs need just 60 points in their remaining 54 games. That's a .555 points% and a pace of 91 points

they haven't played at a 91 point pace since before the Matthews era btw

I don't understand how you can write this with a straight face. I'm sure other leafs fans are also tired of these kinds of posts.... don't you guys have PTSD and not wanna jinx it?

Probably because Toronto outplayed Tampa despite the game 7 loss, TB went on to annihilate the Panthers in 4 and now the Panthers current roster is significantly worse than the one from last year with significantly fewer assets available to re-tool/upgrade. Pretty easy assumption to make.

I understand but don't you guys believe in a higher force? Hockey entities that control your fate? How else would you lose against Colombus and Montreal. I wouldnt want to anger them if i was you

I don't understand how you can watch the Leafs the past 3 seasons and think they are a garbage club and not incredibly unlucky to not have advanced. Starting in the Canadian division under Keefe's first full year as coach when he got to put in his system, the Leafs have been a top 5 NHL team and a top 10 defensive team.

Could be. Team on the uprise more like it.
But yea, I still think next year is when we will see Stevie Ys tangible results.
Still 'm impressed with this seasons team so far.

Na, I mean it's fun to think about and all, but what we do or say has no effect on the outcome of the game. We either look like geniuses or complete jackasses.

As a great man once said, it's the way she goes. Sometimes she goes, sometimes she doesn't.
