Cup or no cup, he has redeemed himself. The big problem before was he didn't show up for big games. This season has been different.

Just today, scored the first goal in game 7...game winning goal! End of story.

The bigger question is will Ovechkin get a tooth implant if he/they win the cup....hmmm :D.

I hope not! :>

He can do that once he hangs them up.

Congrats to Ovi! I hope he wins the cup and his desire to win many more just keeps growing! He matures a lot as a player and I would love to see him breaking more records!

oh ya we need one last illpucks thread to seal the deal :sarcasm:

His play was not any different from his previous playoffs. Arguably he was better 2009 and 10. Last year was the only playoff where he was AWOL. Other than that he was great in playoffs. This year his team finally caught on.

He had nothing to redeem himself for. You might want to check out his numbers in elimination games during his career.

How many of those numbers led to series wins?

Come playoff time, the only thing that matters are the W's.

Up until now, Ovechkin was a guy who would trade his chances at a Cup for those stats. Now, he seems more team focused instead of focusing on himself. And shock...they are winning.

Right, which takes good goaltending, secondary scoring etc. "Does he win thooo" is thinking from 1974. Have fun in the past.

How was he individually-focused in year's past exactly besides you repeating lazy points from Canadian TV analysts?

I agree with Sentinel that he was arguably better in the 2009 and 2010 playoffs... as good as he's been this year. The media will spin this narrative that he's a more team-oriented player now, but he's always wanted to win and he's played hard in the playoffs throughout his career. His attention to detail and defensive play may be better now, but he tilted the ice and scored so much during his peak years that it's hard for me to say he's actually been better in the playoffs than ever before.

Look at Yzerman - was he really better later on in his career than when he was scored 155 points or did he just benefit more from the play of his team in the playoffs?

Ovechkin is playing a nice two way game these days. That is not the biggest difference though. The biggest difference this year us Trotz has been masterful. Caps are getting goals from DSP, Conolly, Burakovky now, Eller, Kuznetsov, etc. Ovechkin has almost always been a playoff beast.

The disrespect Ovechkin gets from some disappoints me. Certain people don't seem to realise that they've been given the opportunity to watch a true legend of the game, one of the greatest that will ever live. During Ovechkin's career, there has been a level of exposure that previous generations of stars never got thanks to the rise of the Internet. Instead of using that gift to enjoy witnessing a special player, some people would instead prefer to cut him down. It's pathetic.
It's the "Cherry mentality" of some NA posters and media.

It’s not just goals off the top circle or assists on the PP.

It’s backchecking hard. It’s motivating teammates with a solid play. Getting the crucial timely goals or assists. He doesn’t take face offs so he can’t have that. It’s creating plays out there.

No, he had been a disappointment. Mark Messier he was not.

This year he is different.

You know he has scored the first goal in a game 7 before eh? and has scored in multiple game 7s.

I used to be one of the biggest Ovechkin's detractor thinking he was just another Russian with no heart like Kovalchoke. But this postseason changed everything and I only wish he finally wins the Stanley Cup at least one time in his career.

As a Pens fan his biggest difference this run has been his composure. In the past he would showboat and celebrate dramatically. I get it, that is his personality. After he scored the goal a minute in last night he celebrated but he was already thinking about the next shift.
