Call for sweeping changes?

How many times do I have to say it before people understand it. Sutter doesn't have a system. He is coaching a modified Terry Murray / Lombardi organization WIDE system. Now Sutter had some input , made some tweeks. But the foundation and base of the system is the same one Terry Murray/Lombardi put in place.

Its from top down, the Monarchs play the exact same system. Once Sutter is gone, the Kings will play exactly the same way they do now. You understand that now ? You do yes?

No, he doesn't get it and he never will. Sutter modified Murray's style somewhat in that he instituted a more aggressive forecheck and possession style. Under Murray the Kings were more passive and spent quite a bit of time in their own zone. Under Sutter they played the best possession game in the NHL, just like Detroit did for years, except more physically done by the Kings.

The problem this season is that the Kings' best players and some key role players did not execute the system well. Guess what? Time to get some new role players.

I don't think Weal would do well on the first line but I don't know how gritty he is in comparison to his size.

Maybe he can shift down to another wing or center.

The issue though is even with letting RR, Stoll, and Williams go and possibly buying out MR, the Kings don't have much Cap space. They won't be able to draw any big or even moderate UFA. It would have to be someone taking a discount on a 1 year deal.

I almost hope it works out like that so the Kings have to play Andreoff, Shore, Weal and maybe even give O'Neil a look. Youth that is cheap.

How are we in cap trouble next season? I am asking honestly because I look at what the cap is supposed to be going up to according to Betteman (quote from a bit ago where he said somewhere around the $71m range) the cap is going up a nice little bit and we are losing $10+m in Stoll RR and JW alone. IF we move MR's contract (hope we do for everyone) that gives us an additional $16m (approx) in cap space and if you add in the $7m of cap increase (alleged) then we could be looking at an additional $18m in cap space next season.

I know my #s are soft but they are close enough to where I am left scratching my head on where our deficiencies are going to be. I have to believe that we will be making a move or two as well as bringing up players like Weal and Forbort next season as well so I see enough cap space to get things done. Where am I messing this up?

First, the cap won't increase that much, $71M is what has been said. Second, if Richards is moved (via trade or buyout) they will likely have to retain some salary, a buyout would require a hit of $1.25M next year, I believe.

Trying to find article about $71M cap.

EDIT: Business board says approx $73M as of now.

But I said that the cap is rumored to be going up to $71m, am I wrong? So take away $1.25m and we still end up with a huge amount of cap space, don't we?

You said the cap was increasing by $7M and I got confused. Well, if you buyout Richards and take Voynov off LTIR (which he will be during the off-season), and the salary commitment is about $59.6M (5.75 - 4.167+1.25) accounts for the decrease from 59.9 to 59.6, until Voynov is guilty and the contract is voided, acquitted and traded or goes back to Russia and the contract comes off the books except a small penalty.

So it will be $59.6? I want to understand, we are losing RR JW and JS and their cap hit comes out to $9.3m. Add in McBain's $550k and we have $9.85m in UFA cash. If the cap is going to $71m (an additional $7m approx over last seasons cap) doesn't that give us an additional $17m approx without considering what happens with VV and MR?

You also have to consider that Muzzin, Martinez, Pearson and Clifford are getting raises totaling about $7M.

See for yourself:

Also, this seasons cap was around $69M, not $64M. So $71M won't be much of an increase.

Losing Regehr ****ing sucks. I hope he told DL in advance so he could at least prepare for it. Huge blow to our blueline...

I think many people thought he was hanging it up after this season. I'm not surprised even a little. Love the guy, a true warrior. But it was time.

Kopitar Should Be Made El Captain...

I like how the franchise is positioned moving forward. We have some problems for sure, but every team has problems. I don't see a need for major changes.

Kopitar should be, and will be, signed to a lucrative long term contract.

I agree wholeheartedly with this statement,Kopitar is our best player by a mile.Respect due Carter,Doughty,Gaborik and Quick! Not only would I make Kopi the captain I'd try to make a deal with Buffalo to get their worst 1st rounder(19th-21th)for Brown! If Lombardi waits too long Brown's value will be nothing and as it sits the Sabres need a RWinger after losing Stewart and Stafford and besides the competitive juices might well up inside Brown again. And it so happens he's a native New Yorker(state).Do it Deano!!!

PS If Brown goes that would be one terrible contract off the books...now if the Kings could entice someone to take Richards...I'd offer one of our promising D-men down in Manchester to get that done. Then the Kings can get Williams signed(can't let a scorer go) since we have so few of them!!!If this happens maybe the Kings can give Zykov a chance on the numero uno line or UFA's CStewart or DStafford might help too but at what cost...

DPS Then the Kings can try to sign Sekera...I'm thinking the Bruins are going to make a big push here...Lombardi better get things rolling really soon or he'll be left holding the bag...Hope Dean isn't feeling too loyal...since that's what got us into trouble...Lewis has to play 4th line centre or somewhere else. The Kings need to get younger,Weal,Zykov,Shore,Forbort... Maybe Berube can backstop Quick and Jones traded for some cap relief...Whatever happens this off-season Mr Lombardi has his hands full and I wish him and the organization the Best Of Luck As Always!!!LA Kings fan for 45 years

DL seemed to know two years in advance if you read today's quotes. Hardly a surprise, but agree a large blueline blow in terms of character and characteristics.

No.

Best forward? Maybe. Our Best player this year wears number 8.

So all this time my hate for Sutter has been misplaced? It isn't Sutter calling the shots...

Seriously Sutter could probably address a lot of issue by making small tweaks here and there... At the end of the day it's Sutter's system.... he benches guys that don't play the way he wants... he throws out lines like Pearson/Lewis/Toffoli... I realize we live in a world where people taking responsibility is rare.

As far as replacing him... I don't see the issue... Sutter didn't get it done this year... will he make the playoffs next year? What's the worst that could happen if he is replaced? The Kings miss the playoffs? What concerns me the most about next year is Sutter won't have the team he had this year.... We all remember the "This isn't the same team as last year" excuse I'm sure.

hey, just hire a shootout coach and we're back in business next year...

Definitely true. I'm not even sure Kopi was our best forward. Maybe, but an argument could be made for Carter as well.

But Doughty was definitely the man this year. I just hope we see a better Kopi next year than we saw this year or we're in trouble.

Carter is one of the most consistent players on this team. Glad he is with us with a great contract. Sometimes I forget he is on this team anyways because he is so rarely discussed outside of GDTs.
