Wolf is going to be a top 5 goalie. He’s elite. I can’t say what Byfield is gonna be but people that are calling this the ‘worst proposal ever’ are clueless.

I agree goalies are voodoo but this kid is special. He’s every bit the prospect Adam Fox and Johnny Gaudreau were (and I was the guy getting laughed at in the top 50 prospect threads for super-hyping Fox abd Gaudreau-which I’ve never done for any other prospect) He’s just special. Nuff said.

The kid almost set a shutout record in the WHL, despite not playing his 20 year old season. Despite being backup to Carter Hart in his first year. Despite playing through 2 covid shortened seasons. Abd yet he still almost set that record  then he goes and wins AHL goalie of the year, and he should have won MVP of the whole league at 20.
He's nowhere near Fox or Gaudreau as a prospect. That's nonsense. He's a career . 917 sv% in the AHL. That's good but nothing otherworldly.

I've been a fan of Wolf for a while. He's going to be a good one. I also have 0 faith Byfield is a productive NHLer

Lmao I just have no idea what anyone sees in Byfield
It’s worth waiting on…. You can find goalie solutions cheaper than that.

Look at guys like dach and vilardi…. Sometimes it takes a couple years for bigger players to get comfortable at nhl lvl

@WhiskeyYerTheDevils

his junior numbers are not good, much like Fox and Johnny they are really uncomparable. Only really Hart put up numbers like that recently. And Wolf was consistently in the .930/.940 range while Hart only really had one elite season. And this is carter hart.

His AHL goalie tandem partners avereged 5% lower that him, that’s a .925 to .875, and these guys are AHL vets with some NHL experience in the case of Dansk. That’s 5 goals every three games. Scoring is up and relative to his peers he pretty much dominated that league last year. The Heat/Wranglers have a terrible blueline. You’re also forgetting most of his peers are 3-4 years older than him. And yet he was still hands down the best player in that league last year. At some point that level of production becomes the norm, not an accident. Those kinds of prospects almost always hit.

Most importantly when you watch him play you can just tell he’s elite. He’s the best player on the ice almost every night. He just has it and it’s a hill I’ll die on.

I wouldn't be trading Wolf unless either a young player on a good contract is coming in return or I'm getting a top 6 winger on a good contract. To be frank, Byfield was a bad pick at the time. We have numerous prospects better than him. We have none better than Wolf.

We picked Trevor Kidd instead of Marty Brodeur in the first.

Gave JS Giguerre for nothing

It would be such a classic Flames management thing to do to trade this kid.

I honestly don’t really watch other teams prospects once they pass the WJC so I’m not going to comment on Byfield, but Wolf is gonna be special.

Value wise wolf is not close to Byfield IMO. Hypothetically though if I somehow knew wolf would be the next Jonny Quick I'd probably do it.

Having a stud franchise goalie is too good for me to pass up on.

Though I am not sold on Byfield replacing Kopitar as of today, I rather wait and give the kid a couple of years to develop before giving up on him.

Purely hypothetical, which of these prospects has more value at the moment and which team would win this trade in the long run?

Wolf is one of the top goaltending prospects in the world with a pretty ridiculous resume for a 21 year old
  • 2021-22 AHL goaltender of the year
  • 2021-22 AHL first-team all-star
  • 2021-22 AHL all-rookie team
  • 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship gold medallist
  • 2020-21 WHL goaltender of the year
  • 2019-20 CHL goaltender of the year
  • 2019-20 WHL goaltender of the year
  • 2019-20 USA Hockey top junior goaltender
  • 2018-19 CHL scholastic player of the year
  • 2018-19 WHL scholastic player of the year

Byfield is the 2020 #2 overall pick with an impressive junior resume himself, but hasn't had a lot of traction as a pro so far. Still a lot of potential for the 20 year old C with a big frame and explosive skating.

Getting outscored and outproduced at the NHL level by some dude named Chinakov nobody had ever heard of as the #2 overall pick

Getting outproduced and outscored at the AHL level by a 7th rounder named Ben McCartney as the #2 overall pick

Here's a list of 1st round forwards taken in 2020 that have outproduced Byfield's pace at the NHL or AHL level:

Alex Lafreniere
Tim Stutzle
Lucas Raymond
Alexander Holtz
Jack Quinn
Marco Rossi
Cole Perfetti
Anton Lundell
Seth Jarvis
Dylan Holloway
Lucas Reichel
Dawson Mercer
Yegor Chinakov
Hendrix Lapierre
Jacob Perreault
Brendan Brisson

So basically all of them but a couple

Poke fun if you want. Only casuals get attached and fixated on where a player is drafted. Of these blue chip prospects one has done nothing but sharply trend up and the other has done nothing but sharply trend down since draft day. I don't really know what exactly their value is in NHL circles and neither does anyone else unless they get traded. To say their value isn't even comparable though? Really screams ignorance.

The facts are that one is a top 3 prospect in the world at their position, and the other is Quinton Byfield.

The fact that you actually took time for this post lol

A 7th rounder for the 2nd OA pick? Mhm..
While Kings very likely decline this is just a stupid breakdown on the proposal. Joe Pavelski was a 7th rounder in the year Eric Staal went 2nd OA. Do you think Columbus should have traded Ryan Murray for Connor Hellebuyck? Wolf is a top 3 goalie prospect in the league, writing him off as a "7th rounder" is complete ignorance.
