There's a lot more that goes into things like this than just the number too. Contract structure, clauses, team success, familiarity. 11x7 is only 1M more than 9.5x8 to go to nose diving team with a lot of issues to work out. If Calgary needs to add 125k to match that seems like hardly an issue

Gaudreau is just retiring after a 7 year contract if he leaves Calgary?

You have to factor in what Gaudreau can get as a free agent in the year after his 7 year contract if he signs elsewhere. If he's still a 50-60 point player at 35 he can easily land $5 million plus in his 8th season. If he's an NHL player at all still he'll land $3 million or more somewhere.

Purely from a money POV sure. Flyers cant offer him a contending close-knit team though
It’s the next 7 yrs , things can changed. The Flames were shit with internal fighting as recent as last year.

Bottom line, they need to pay him. He ain’t taking no discount otherwise he would have signed already

How many 36+ players get big contracts? Pavelski is the only one recently. We'll see what Bergeron gets this summer.

This argument is so flawed though as it not only assumes he doesnt want to retire at a pretty standard retirement age but also that he is still producing that highly. You are trying to predict 7 years into the future here, maybe dont look so deep into that crystal ball.

I don’t think the “coming home” card is as big of a deal for Johnny anymore.Isn’t his wife or fiancé from Calgary area ? I could be wrong but if his wife is happy in Calgary then I don’t think Johnny HAS to go home to the Philly area

I don't know where she is from, but she went to University in Philly and serves as a registered nurse at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. They also got married in Philly and live in the US in the off season. According to an article I found.

I fail to see how my post led you to the conclusion you gathered, but I also see the poster I'm responding to now, so it makes more sense. You were never thr brightest.
Double Dion doesn't resort to personal attacks. Fear makes people do strange things. It's ok to be scared of the Flames. Just don't let fear drive your decision making.

After M. Tkachuks comments through the Brady contract I fully expect him to hold out for as much as he can
I figure he likely gets at a min 10m

I'd trade him if that were the case. Seriously, Johnny is the one that stirs the drink on that line. Tkachuk is NOT worth more than 9.5M.

Purely money...except that's the team he grew up cheering for. And the city his wife works in. And the team his dad works for. And where his good buddy Hayes is at.

Gaudreau, Couturier, Ellis, plus a likely top 5 player from this year's draft added to the current Flyers and it could be a quick turnaround after an abysmal season.

A couple months ago, I had heard that the Gaudreau deal was tabled around 9.75/9.8 x 8; was told last week that this isn't even remotely the case anymore with him now being a Hart finalist more than likely.

Anything related to Gaudreau will be somewhere in the Marner/Panarin realm. Along the lines of 11M x 8 years, 11.3M x 8 years.

In terms of Tkachuk. Don't be overly surprised if he signs with Calgary on a mid-term deal. 9.8-10.4 x 5 years.

Marner and Panarin are paid much less than what you are suggesting. Panarin got 81.5M and Marner got 65.4M . You are saying he gets at least 88-90.4M

Why does he need a big 36+ contract? You already stated the 7 year was more $ than the 8 year, so whatever else he gets in the 8th year at 36+ is just more gravy on top. If he goes to some tax free place then its way more than an extra million, since like you said - lots of things go into the contract, like location.

Id be doing cartwheels if he only got 9.5m
he 100% is worth 9.5m
especially worth it now that he let the circus sideshow come to an end and focused on his game
Either way doesn't matter what you think he's going to get atleast 9.5m min

That is a completely baseless claim, Landeskog took a discount as recently as this summer
Only Johnny’s can make real claim. The rest of us including you are baseless. We are having opinions based on what we see

Wtf Landeskog has anything to do with Johnny?

JG will get 11M and he'll be headed to NJ or Buff.

Tkachuk will resign but they'll have to overpay (9.5-10/8 years).

Flames will be bottom 3 in Pacific next year.

Can't wait :)

Your previous statement implied that Johnny would have signed already if he was going to take a discount, as if it was factual. I provided an example of a recent big name player who did not sign before hitting UFA but then went and took a discount anyways. Landeskog doesnt directly have anything to do with Johnny but he does prove your opinion wrong

The Oilers do know a thing or 2 about finishing at the bottom. You guys are the experts. Decade plus of abject failure and you still have the stones to run your mouth. Kudos.

I’ve felt the exact amount of playoff wins in my lifetime as a Flame fan born at the same time. Oh boy that decade sucked bad but hey, I guess finishing top 3 in the west and getting knocked out in the first round while being the favourites is also fun for your fan base? Idk, seems like that decade resulted in me being pretty comfortable for atleast another 4 years (contracts) whereas your little Sutter bump will result in playoff failure again and then a rebuild 😂😂

It'll cost a lot. Great players cost a lot. Luckily we have a lot of other great value deals like Lindholm, Hanifin, and Andersson to offset it.
Gaudreau 10.5 x 8
Tkachuk 9.6 x 6

no one is really happy living in calgary .. haha :P

Curious that it would have been voted one of the most livable cities in the world for like 10 straight years then...

He also has a an awesome house at the Jersey shore...but I still don't think it means he's definetly coming back here to Philly. I guess we will see this off season but a lot depends on who the Flyers even sign as a coach....I know Fletcher said he wanted to get bigger but we will see how that goes.
