How has Pysyk played this season? Myself and most Sabres fans I know where extremely upset when he was traded, and Kulikov has been worse than horrendous this year.
Just curious how Pysyk has looked, thanks in advance for any replies.

Pysyk has arguably been our best defenseman by far, good on the forecheck, great puck movement and passing as well. He pairs well with Petro pretty nicely, obviously still not a great offensive defenseman but much better than the others defense wise.

I really like him. Hope he's here beyond this season.

Why has Kuli been bad besides his injuries?

It could be his injured back, but he has been the Sabres worst defensemen by far, and we have had to use AHL callups on a fairly regular basis. He makes turnovers, horrendous passes, doesn't clear out ANYONE EVER from in front of the net, is always out of position/late getting to position and has made a home screening OUR goaltender. The last few weeks he honestly does not even look like he belongs in the NHL. It is no wonder he couldn't be traded for even a low round pick.

To avoid misconception, I think you guys mean for the role he's expected to play (3rd pairing/PK) he's been the best, right? Or as I would put it, the most consistent one.

I said he has been our best defensive dman. I don't think any dman is better on the team at playing defensively from a positional stand point.

I mean, he is the most consistent defenseman on the team. He rarely makes mistakes, and has really impressed. I'd say he has impressed me more than Ekblad, Yandle, and even Demers.

Not sure if I'd rank him the best on the team, but honestly has anyone else been better than him?

I think Petro would've challenged Pysyk for that title, had he played a full season.

It's tough to evaluate different roles, especially with the way our top4 has underachieved this year. Pysyk has played some top4 games and I got the sense that it was too much for him. But for a bottom pairing guy he's been good and definitely exceeded expectations.

I think Potvin said it best he is the "band aid" of our defense. Whoever he is paired with plays better. If we need stop the other team from scoring I want Pysyk on the ice over any of our defenseman.

I was honestly pretty upset when we traded Kuli for him, but now I couldn't be happier. He's been great for us.

Yeah, as has been said, Pysyk has been pretty reliably defensively. Like most of the team, he hasn't played as physically in front of the net as I would like, but I tend to think that's a result of the system. Offensively, he's a decent puck mover and has been good pinching in on the forecheck. Although, his shot leaves a lot to be desired.

I am a bit surprised Kulikov has been such a disappointment. He had some obvious holes in his game, but he was developing into a nice, solid-skating, positional d-man.

At least he hits the net, unlike DK and EG.

Hmmm. I didn't realize that when put together and pronounced just the right way, their initials say "d-keg".

He's been good. Very reliable bottom pairing Dman. But when playing top 4 minutes, he has shown signs of struggle. I hope we keep him though.

Yeah me too. I felt that his last two seasons with us, especially the last one, he took such major strides in simplifying his game and minimizing his mistakes. Sure, he still couldnt hit the net if his life depended on it, but defensively I felt really confident when he was on the ice.

Im surprised to hear he hasnt been able to do that in buffalo

Mark Pysyk went to play for SaiPa in Finland and his new team included a video in their press release where Pysyk scored a hat trick for Panthers.

Saipa also signed Michael Hutchinson. He scored his hat-trick against him
