Lol @ comparing Hudon to Nylander.

One player playing way over his head against someone who is dominating even when he doesn't hit the score sheet. Hmm I wonder which one will have more consistency

I mean Hudon is a good prospect. Not Nylander level but he's still someone to look out for.

Seeing Ehlers (2a in his last 8) and Larkin (4p his past 10) slow down after their torrid starts makes me glad the Leafs stuck to their guns with Nylander. While putting up 40 points or whatever at the NHL level would be a solid rookie season, scoring at his current 111 point pace in the AHL while also polishing his overall game is so much better for his development.

I think about it this way. A guy in a slump with his team losing has to figure out how to get back to playing the way he was, just getting back to his baseline, because his team needs him to be productive. That's time and effort he isn't spending on his development, trying to get to the next level, during some of his most important formative years, and extra pressure to worry about.

But in the situation Nylander is in, he's going to produce no matter what, so he doesn't need to worry about slumps or losses. He can focus entirely on improving his game.

Nylander now leading AHL in scoring as a 19 year old while playing less games.

Scoring at a >100 point pace as a 19 year old kid

Dude, you said he would be in the top scorers of the NHL and I said that was foolish. I'll stand by that claim... and be correct in doing so.

Man that game was crazy, for all the lack the NHL get for low scoring games... I really prefer 3-2 games over 9-8 :O

Nylander has a wicked shot.

Calm down. Just because he's the leading scorer right now doesn't mean he'll easily win the scoring title. Just last season Hudon, as a rookie, was the leading scorer until mid-december and despite Hudon's hot start, he ended up behind Brown at the end of the season. So, not only did he not win the scoring title, he wasn't even the best rookie scorer.

Even as an AHL rookie last year, aside from his first 6 games when he first came into the league, Nylander never went more than 2 games without getting at least a point. Consistency in offense has always been a part of his game.

I think the Leafs are doing the right thing keeping Nylander in the AHL, but Larkin hasn't really slowed down or started playing worse. He's consistently been Detroit's best or second best forward all season and his longest scoreless stretch so far is 3 games. Hard to pick up points when the team is scoring 1 goal per game.

Again, we don't care about what Larkin's doing. This is a Nylander thread. The kid who is currently dominating the AHL as a teenager.

Nylander sure looks nhl ready, he is being developed beautifully, he will be a treat to watch on the leafs next year. With how good the leafs are playing i think we finish in teh 5th-12 range in terms of draft picks, i hope we take his brother who looks great for the steelheads.

...The poster you're quoting was objecting to a statement made about Larkin by a Toronto fan comparing him to Nylander. It's very unreasonable to get offended by that.

On pace for the 4th best PPG from an under 20 kid in the AHL ever...and two of the three players higher than him played in the 1950s.

Higher PPG than Eberle, Spezza, Pastrnak, RNH, Bergeron, etc.

That is fine and dandy - but a lot of work needs to be done before he can be considered someone that will contend for the scoring title for the best league in the world.

I am all about the hype, but pump the breaks.

Funny how the majority of non-Leafs fans have disappeared from this thread. Not much to say about Willy when there's little to be negative about.

Good to see he's doing well. I don't like the Leafs but I have always thought Nylander looked great.

I do think the jump to the NHL is a whole different ball game, though. Let's hope he's not Stephane Da Costa.

Odd comparison since the only time Da Costa was ppg in the AHL was when he was 24. His offense should translate much better than Da Costa.

And do you honestly think that translates to him challenging for the NHL scoring lead??
Kid is a fantastic prospect, but you need to scale back your expectations a bit. I expect him to be the caliber of player who will make a huge splash next year, but by huge splash, I mean 60ish points. I think most Leafs fans would be thrilled with that.

Who actually thinks he's going to get 100+ points, even if he plays the full season?

His stats are clearly inflated by getting four points in an 8 point game. That's not going to happen again all season. Instead of a 1.35PPG pace, maybe 1.1-1.15 is reasonable (which is still fantastic).

I don't think anyone ACTUALLY thinks he'll score 100pts, people are just excited and riding the high.

Finishing anything above PPG is fantastic
