Surprise surprise. Nylander gets the first goal of the season for the marlies. Who would've guessed.

First of many this year for sure!!!

I don't think I've seen anyone question his fens ice skill or creativity.

I'll be happy is he works on his play away from the puck, and his physicality.

Wonder what that means. Is he saying they're comparable, or is he saying Larkin has something Nylander doesn't? Either way, awkward.

He's relating him to a talented young kid hungry to prove himself in the NHL. Sounds like Nylander. I believe this further reinforces the theory that Babcock would've sent Larkin down to the AHL had he played for him.

If he sees them as comparable which clearly he does, it probably just strengthens the idea buzzing around here that Babcock already knows Nylander is perhaps one of the best forwards on the team and sending him down wasn't because he wasn't ready for the NHL but more of a new organizational philosophy where they don't want to be seen as rushing their prospects.

The second part makes it sound like he's saying he doesn't want Nylander playing with the current Leafs' players (yet).

(Larkin) tonight obviously played with two good players in (Henrik) Zetterberg and (Justin) Abdelkader . . . those are nice guys to play with if you’re a kid.

Awkward? You don't even know what he means. I don't even know what he means.

Tweet should be deleted and reposted with some context

A goal and assist with 9 shots, nice.

With the comparison thing, does anyone think that could be Babs doubting his decision to send Willie down with how well Larkin played, given that Larkin himself would be in the A if Babcock was still in Detroit?

From what I can gather from watching the interview, he was talking with the Detroit management team/scouts and not the Leafs scouts/management. There isn't 100% context to the question but it probably was something mentioned before the cameras were rolling.

Or maybe it was management and not Babcock who made the decision to send Nylander down? And Babcock is saying Larkin and Nylander are comparable and Nylander should be up?

Idk. That tweet is really confusing and even reading the full conversation it doesn't make much sense either.

Reading the full convo I think it was more from the perspective of "this is why Larkin is NHL ready, Nylander still needs to work on A, B, and C before he can move up. Larkin would have definitely made my roster if I was still coaching the wings". That kind of comparison.......

Babcock said he took the leafs job because he has final say on his roster. So mgmt sending him down against babcocks wishes seems unlikely, and Babcock himself has said Nylander isn't ready and still has a lot to work on. He's quoted in Toronto papers saying this, not sure why this myth is persisting.......

This was my take, but the world was not ready to hear it. :P

Unless someone has the full conversation in question, we have no idea what he is trying to say. Some of you are just trying to spin it to fit your narrative.

I just found this.

Larkin is 19. Nylander is 19. Larkin was selected 15th overall in the 2014 draft, seven slots after Nylander, who went eighth overall. Larkin played all of six AHL playoff dates last season after deciding to forego his three remaining years of eligibility at the University of Michigan. Nylander, after playing pro in Sweden, played 37 games in the AHL last season.

Someone asked Babcock after Friday’s game if Larkin is a rookie people should be talking about.

“I sure think so,†the Maple Leafs coach said. “I asked our guys after (the game) if you compare him to Nylander, because we sent our kids down. (Larkin) tonight obviously played with two good players in (Henrik) Zetterberg and (Justin) Abdelkader . . . those are nice guys to play with if you’re a kid.â€

You’ll notice the coach brought up Nylander’s name unprompted. And you could read between the lines and infer that the fear in Toronto, at least in some minds, is that Nylander wouldn’t have the luxury of Zetterberg’s leadership.

That's what I took away from that as well. Being surrounded by the experienced star vets in Zetterberg and soon Datsyuk is a better situation for a high end prospect to break into than a dumpster fire Toronto roster (1 GF, 7 GA through the first 2 games)

Remember prior to last season when everyone thought this dumpster fire roster (+ Kessel) was playoff contenders and was better than the Red Wings?

Man do things change fast.

Good context cotton. So it's more of, Larkin is in the NHL because of a, b and z.

So, who do we compare Nylander to in about 65 games when Ehlers and Larkin are no longer considered prospects.

Nylander/dal cole/virtanen might be the better peer group now.
