I think taking their time with Nylander looks to have paid off. He looks a lot stronger out there and the AHL seasoning helped.

Props to him because he didn't get a whole ton of time on Matthew's wing at camp to get the chemistry going because of bumps and bruises to Kadri and Bozak so he had to centre another line entirely.

He had a strong game though.

He will be a great sidekick to Matthews to start his career off.

Eventually I think he will be moved to another line to be the offensive catalyst somewhere else.

He was good today.... but I thought he had several games last year where he was more impressive.

That is scary. He is the perfect linemate for Matthews

The nominees: Nylander, Marner, Matthews.

HF crashes shortly after

and somehow the winner is Zaitsev. Wouldn't that would be hilarious?

He could have scored today too, the puck just trickled past the post behind Anderson--that release is nothing to scoff at.

It looks like he, Hyman and Matthews have generated some good line chemistry. Nylander seems to be able to find guys with precise passes and here's hoping that Matthews's quick release makes the most of them.

The dekes before Matthews got his first goal, and then he almost scored on a tight angle on the open side. Some great chances Marner, Matthews, Nylander all had in just a span of a minute here

Had Matthews been able to pull the trigger after the initial pass by Nylander and score, that goal would be up there with Matthews' second of the night.

Filthy dangle by Willie to gain the zone and an awesome pass in the slot.

He was amazing along with Matthews and Marner.

He was key in two of Matthews' goals and was buzzing all night. Him and Matthews already have great chemistry.

Was really good lastnight and starting to have some great chemistry with Matthews.
Not a fan of Hyman on that line but he works his ass off and does his thing.

Lost amongst the matthews and marner hype is nylander.

He put up 13 points in 22 games last year.

Though I wonder how much longer he'll be a winger for.

Never going to win an award is Hyman... but he absolutely deserves to be where he is. On that first goal, he recovered the puck after Willy put it on net, and slides it right on to Matthews stick.

He also had a good semi break chance in the 2nd where he burst to goal.

Not the best vision or hands, but a good skater, works his butt of and gets pucks to net.

If he can sustain this, he will be a real solid top 9 winger for us

I always thought Nylander>Marner. Marner is overhyped, Nylander is the real deal

The beauty is that they all look like the real deal. Marner was incredible last night too despite not having any points. Led the team with Matthews in SOG and could have easily come away with 2-3 points himself if Bozak or JVR converted on some of the gorgeous chances Marner created.

Marner had 11 shot attempts last night, could've scored a few goals himself. Breakaway, hit the crossbar, etc.

He was also playing with garbage Bozak as his C.

Very excited to see the leafs load it up towards the end of the season and bring out 16-34-29 late in games if we're down a goal...

Pretty remarkable how his compete level has improved. Looks like he works as hard as anyone on the ice, he didn't do backchecking at all when he was 17. Hope he keeps doing it, not just these first few games.

I think the best part is that his compete level can reasonably increase. He still floats a little bit when the puck is in the o-zone.

Willy's a very competitive kid and you can tell he...takes a lot of pride in himself and that he really enjoys being the best player on his team. I think having a guy like Matthews come in, who is at the very least his equal offfensively and his superior defensively, is the best thing that could have happened to Nylander. With any luck it'll spark that competitive drive and have a big positive impact on his development.

Probably until the deadline, where Bozak will hopefully be traded, thus opening a spot for Nylander at C.

That's assuming there aren't any injuries. If Bozak, Kadri, or Matthews go down, no doubt Nylander steps in at C.

Hyman - Matthews - Nylander seems like a line that will likely stick together for quite some time.

What I'd really like to see as well is:
Soshnikov - Kadri - Marner

Exactly need a guy like Hyman to do the dirty work, forecheck, be a pest in front of the net while the two magic men on the line do their thing.

Worth mentioning, he had 11 points in the final 13 games iirc, and that was playing with players of much lesser ability that himself. Playing with Matthews will really put him in a position to succeed.
