Well to be a legit top 6 player Matthews has to take out guys like Crosby, Malkin, Benn, McDavid, Ovie, etc. A guy like Eichel could also make a case to break into the top 6.

That is going to be very tough and unlikely for him to achieve. Doesn't mean he won't have any issues landing somewhere just outside of that. But to break into the tier of the best handful of players in the world, it's unlikely.

I'm not sure where "top 6" came from though lol.

Of course it will get better. Still doesn't mean he is going to become a Selke candidate. I'm not saying he couldn't. But again, tempered expectations. It would be a miracle for all 3 of Matthews, Nylander and Marner to become top 10 players in the NHL. Some Toronto fans act like that these players are a lock to all be that great and its ridiculous. The expectations from the three should be set at getting three good top six players and one elite 1C. That would be a win for Toronto. All three of these players have a long way to go to accomplish that. A lot of players tear up juniors, AHL, and even go as far as showing tons of skill in the NHL. But for some reason or another some players who clearly showed a ton of skill in the NHL can never quite become a PPG elite player.

I mean look as close as the recent past to the Toronto roster. Kadri, a 7th overall, who instantly scored at a PPG rate at the AHL. Kid is currently a really good hockey player. I like him and was rooting for Toronto to lock him up long-term (they did). To this day he shows flashes of high end talent. But he has never been able to bust over that hump. This happens a lot. I'm not going to get into the debate of the current prospects being higher caliber than Kadri. But a lot more was expected from Kadri and the point is. any of these prospects could meet a similar fate.

I play in a competitive dynasty league and have Nylander as well as traded for the 1st overall to get Matthews. I even have Kadri for SOG, hits and solid points. I love Nylander and Matthews as players and really need them to pan out. My point is that some fans around here just need to temper their expectations a little bit. That's all.

I think there is a bit of a misunderstanding. A top 6 player is a player that plays on one of the top 2 lines for a team. Not top 6 players in the league. Other than that I think you are pretty spot on with your assessment.

William nylander is the best swedish prospect ever

Wow i am so impressed by williams puck skills. This guy is the real deal. If not for an injury ridden last year he would set the world on fire. No swedish prospect comes close to nylanders skill level.

I am certain he will score 100+ points in nhl

Nylander is simply outstanding. With him sweden would had won the wjc and world cup.

His defensive game needs some work.

Unlike marner who is always on the boards he floats a bit too much.

but that doesn't matter much, because a certain former leafs winger was criticized for a small flaw like that too.

He is there to create offense. There are already a million swe players that are defensive responisble. We dont need another one.

Can't see him not winning the Art Ross this season.

I think his defensive game is actually pretty solid for his age. Not Selke level by any means, but still good.

I can never tell when certain fan bases are being serious or being sarcastic in some threads haha

Anyways, I'm hoping he sticks in NHL all season and has an extremely good year.

That 100 pt prediction is something we(majority of leaf fans) wouldn't put on Matthews lol. I think if he doesn't hit his max ceiling but still gets close to it he can become a 65 pt center that can anchor the 2nd line.

When did he change from 39 to 29? I despise the number 29 haha... I assume it's cause his dad wore 92 so he just swapped the numbers around??

I liked 39!

First time in a long time 3 rookies will combine for 200+ points..
Its regretable there isnt much hype for these three coming into the season

I feel like Sheldon Cooper from big bang theory today and not knowing if forsure people are being sarcastic haha

Hmm I don't agree... He's quite good defensively, are you saying you need to always be on the boards to be good defensively?

39 was better

Also his defensive game is weird. He floats a bit, but he is still good on board battles, back checking and stripping the puck. overall its pretty good i would have to say.

This is the most noticeable aspect of his defensive game imo, he does this really well. I like 29 better than 39 and 62 but I agree that 92 would have been sweet. One day maybe.

Sarcasm? :P I think most is tongue in cheek, I agree that its sometimes tough to tell.

I agree and iirc, his underlying defensive stats were quite good last season. He plays a calculated game that sometimes makes it look like he's floating, when he's really not.
