He's good for a 19 year old centre considering his linemates and that he is on the last place team in the league. In the grand scheme of things there are things to work on.

No concerns really on my end, the willingness to learn is there.

Totally agree. I think I said that myself in an earlier post. Both will and mind to be a good possession-based two-way player is there. Consistency and experience is not, and there are a few things for him to work on. But that's all.

The great thing is, with Babcock, I have a lot of confidence that Nylander will have a great evolution as a player. He's going to be a good one.

I especially liked how after the Detroit game, Babcock sat down with Nylander and showed him clips of everything he let Datsyuk get away with and what he needs to do better in the future.

Babs is really going to push him to develop every aspect of his game.

Absolutely. The approach they took this year was smart. They could have kept Nylander and Brown around but realized they also needed to refine things with Bozak and Kadri, once that was handled, they can now devote time to these guys and work on smoothing out things in their game, it won't happen over night for them...and things like another summer in the gym for Nylander will go a long way towards helping him next year, he'll only get stronger etc.

I would laugh if Nylander wins the Calder next year, on this board he still be called non-elite player. Insert whatever the typical nagtives about Nylander

He's pretty average for a 19 year old centre on a last place team. I think what has been surprising so far is the proficiency at face-offs, that's something that usually comes with experience, he'll only pick up more tricks over the years.

I think playing centre in the SHL helped him a lot. He was a good faceoff man there too. He has such a quick and deceptive stick that it helps with the speed and timing. I agree, over time he'll learn more tricks.

Could he make the Swedish men's world championship team? That might be a more interesting challenge than the Marlies playoffs.

I think Toronto have said that they will send him down to ahl, so probably not this year, maybe next year.

He was scouted by Sweden who had also asked the Leafs. They immediately shut it down so he can play for the Marlies.

I would hold it against him if he chose Sweden over the team that he's fought beside and with for the better part of the season. But he doesn't seem like that kind of player.

The narrative from the haters will be "Nylander played over 20 games last year so he shouldn't even be in consideration for the Calder"

I just want to bring this up again because I don't think people really noticed it the first time. Watch the Greening goal again at 3:35 and remember that Nylander's doing this to Brian Campbell.

His edge work is so good.

The Swedish coach was at the ACC for William's first 3 point game, and basically said they wanted him 100%.

Babcock and Nylander shut it down saying his no 1 priority is the Marlies... as it should be. This is the team he spent most of the year with.

But if the Marlies get upset early, expect him to go

Marlies bound after tonight games, so hopefully he does well in what should be his last games in the AHL.

I'm praying he becomes Babs Datsyuk 2.0

But he's Swedish and great hair so what you really meant is Zetterberg ;)

(jk, even thought I do think his game is more comparable to someone like Zetterberg than Datsyuk)

I don't see it.

His game screams Datsyuk at me more than it does Zetterberg. Who knows if the rest of his defensive game will ever round out nearly as well (Or his offensive game, of course, but he has that kind of skill). But his stick checking, if nothing else, is Datsyukian.

Outside of being Swedish Zetterberg doesn't make much sense to me

On-topic, I noticed that Nylander leads the league in iPPP going into this game. He's had a primary point on 89.8% of all goals scored with him on the ice. That's even strength. And goals for, obviously.

That's a pretty cool stat.

The kid can create magic. Being able to watch Nylander, Marner, Rielly, JVR and the 2016 pick running a powerplay will be crazy.
