39 was better

Also his defensive game is weird. He floats a bit, but he is still good on board battles, back checking and stripping the puck. overall its pretty good i would have to say.

It's like a lazy Datsyuk style defensive game. Hopefully it's just the slow-start adjustment period him and Marner seem to have where they go from thinking through every move to getting into the flow of things and reacting automatically.

29 is sick but I dont think he'll keep it

39 was ugly 62 was pretty good too

He's a lock for the team this year and he chose 29 because it's his father's number flipped over.

I think he's going to keep 29.

Won't lie, I wasn't a big fan of Lou's number policy but I'm loving 29 on him and 16 on Marner.

Like 16 on Marner, not a fan of 29. Loved Potvan has a kid, and it will always feel like a goalie number to me.

The policy has changed.
He's treating the honoured numbers, as being retired.
It maybe a new things, when the new banners are revealed, that they're retiring them, or he decided to give them the respect they deserve.

With so many, he has to change.

I doubt they are officially retiring them, and its not like 92 is retired.

Didn't we used to have the rule that all rookies had to wear a number in the 40s? I'm pretty sure that's why Kadri, Bozak, Komarov, etc all had numbers in the 40s. While Lou's number policy isn't the greatest, I think it's better than having half our team wearing something in the 40s.

I think that was a coincidence. There was a rule on no high numbers (which was relaxed when we got Kessel, but held true for rookies).

In general I hate the whole, half-retired #'s bit. Either they are retired or they aren't. I do understand teams that won't issue numbers of players who died while playing for them, but not formally retiring them (see Barilko Leafs, or Chiasson with the Hurricanes). If Matt Stajen can wear 14, then Mitch Marner should be able to wear 93. The funny thing is, the Leafs were actually the first team to ever retire number (Ace Baily).

Nylander got such a high self-confidence i hope babcock doesnt destroy it

Nailed it. I think his floating is due to him trying to present better offensive opportunities/breakout speed and not because he doesn't care to play good defensively. For that reason, I think it will get stamped out pretty quick by Babcock as he tries to get Nylander to play the best that he can defensively before worrying about his offensive plays/skills.

Assuming Nylander does stick with Matthews as a pair (I'm not sure if they will or not), Nylander will probably be expected to play defensive situations and work on his defensive play as I think Matthews will be getting some key defensive matchups/be used in more defensive situations within a few months.

Nylander, 2 assist game (one a great feed) and he isn't on the top page? What is going on in Leafland..........

I just can't believe we have Matthews, Marner, AND Nylander. These three are all fantastic with star potential.

He had a strong game today. Was really impressed with his work in the corners and along the boards

Very good game from Nylander today. It seems as if Nylander and Auston Matthews compliment each other quite well.

Really great work tonight. The 4 big Leafs rookies (I'm including Zaitsev) were fantastic tonight. What a bright future.

Being overshadowed by Matthews will be good for him. Looks like he's already working a lot harder out there than in the past.
