C/W Marat Khusnutdinov (2020, 37th, MIN)

2 games, 2 KHL points for the newly turned 19yo. It’s funmy, he’s very young for his draft. I have made this point before, but I think his skill level and play style is very similar to Matthew Beniers. Beniers being just a couple months younger than Khusnutdinov. Both players have decent skill and elite motors. If MK is a few months younger, maybe he goes in the first round of the 2021 draft.

I hope he does. Why do you hate Kaprizov?

Haha - not a hater.

Just that negotiations with Kaprizov have been f%^&*n difficult, always. This agent seems above average in the "difficult to deal with" category. There is/was a baseball agent named Scott Boras that was also a nightmare for GMs to deal with.

My point is I would like negotiations with Khusnutdinov to go more smoothly.

That was irony. Meaning that Kaprizoiv has the right to choose his agent and get his money, just like everybody else. Both sides are in a bit of uncharted territory because the shortened season affected player status and he is not your ususal RFA.

So far Kaprizov's career is exemplary to why you should be patient, work hard and not rush things. If Khusnutdinov mimics that he might end up a better player than predicted. He's had a terrific start to the season. It's two games for now, but he sure is headed in the right direction. That does not mean though he is NHL ready by any measure.

Can this kid play center in the NHL or is he destined to be a winger? I've heard opinions on both sides.

Hard to say. He’s small, but he’s a high-end skater with a good two-way game and compete. I think he can, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he doesn’t.

To me he reminds me a lot of early Haula. Great skater and quickness starting and stopping. Always on the right side of the puck. Not physical per se, but some snarl to his game. Doesn’t seem to have the offensive tool box to become a top end producer. 2/3rd liner tweener seems about right. He’ll carve out a career in the NHL with those abilities assuming he wants to. The Wild will be happy with that IMO.

Thought I'd bring this up from an earlier post. I thought that Yeo and the Wild hampered Haula's offensive development early on. Hopefully SKA/Wild are smarter with Marat. I'd just as soon he spends an extra year in Russia if MN is going to stick him on 4th line duties when he comes over.

Button also compared him to Beauvillier, which isn't a bad comparison if he is switched to the wing.

I would rather he come over and play in Iowa next season then spend another season in Russia. I'm worried he would pull another Kaprizov and sign a 3 year KHL deal.

Agree that an additional three year deal after that would be a killer, but I would be fine with a one year deal, if it allows him to hit the NHL running in 23-24. Hard to say what is the right path till we see how he finishes this year. I am a fan of having a young player develop in circumstances where the peripherals(i.e. language, culture, food, travel) aren't a distraction. I'd rather see him in the KHL than the AHL next year, if that's the way it is going to go.

I have heard comparisons to Pageau. Kinda sounds like him although he is pretty physical for a guy his size.
