I'm a bit of a tough grader on prospects because, well, most of them don't work out...but Gabe Perreault is one that I really, really like and it all starts with his mental game. He has elite hockey sense and one of the sharpest mental processors of the last few drafts. I broke down a little bit of what makes him tick here...

Thanks for the input!

Aidan Hreschuk. Taken in the third round once upon a time (2021), but now hardly even on the third line for BC.
He could never score for a smaller guy, so not surprised.

That’s the type of play where the player who misses feels a lot of shame that they ruined what would’ve been the assist of their teammate’s career. I think most people would feel way worse about that than missing an ordinary chance. Should buy Perreault dinner or something, at least.

The pass is pretty pedestrian by Gabe's lofty standards. The most impressive part about Perreault there is being in the position to receive it in the first place. BC was on the penalty kill there and Western Michigan is driving up the ice. Most guys are retreating there. But Perreault knows how aggressive Leonard is and is ready to turn around to make himself available as soon as Leonard takes possession. High level anticipation.

Gabe Article

Well, it’s safe to say that Cutter Gauthier believes the New York Rangers have a gem in forward prospect Gabe Perreault. The Anaheim Ducks forward gushed about his former Boston College teammate recently when speaking with The Athletic’s Peter Baugh.

“He’s sick,” Gauthier said about Perreault. “He’s got like 10 eyes on his head. He can see everything. … (He) can make plays out of his a– that I have never seen before. We played together on the power play and he made life so easy. He was feeding me pucks that not a lot of guys (were able) to.”

At the time I wanted the Hawks to take GP at 19 instead of Moore and that has only been reinforced with time. How good would Perreault and Bedard be on the powerplay? At least I drafted Gabe on my fantasy team which to be honest I care more about!

Gabe is not 6'5 with blazing speed so he sucks according to the board so you're not missing much.

he is ridiculous good but i’m not sure his pace of play will translate into the nhl where you really have no time and space which is his game . when i watch smith who has not great pace really struggle for the sharks that’s a red flag for gabe at next level . leonard style of play translates the best out of that group -

I don't disagree, the pace will be something that he will have to get acclimated to. I do think he has the IQ to work through it. But yes, he won't be able to walk around the offensive zone in the NHL the same way he does vs AIC

That was my main issue with his game last year. That line had a lot of quick strike rush plays and he usually can time his skating to get into open ice but there were times where you could see him get into a contested rush against backcheckers that he probably just would not win against versus stronger/faster NHL level competition. Could see him still be very good at the NHL level though and be like a Toffoli who isn't very fast but has a great sense of timing and does a good job in tight spaces. He does work hard on the boards and I think that'll take him far.

Perreault is so smart that the skating and size won’t matter. They are below average traits. Let’s not get them twisted, but when you have otherworldly sense and scoring skills it won’t matter. He’ll move pucks so quick that players won’t be able to close on him and his game is not based on skating around with it for large amounts of time and playing keep away.

He's gonna be really good.
Good path to the NHL if the Rangers do not re-sign Reilly Smith.

Smith probably should have seen some time in the AHL but the Sharks want to sell tickets with him and Celebrini coming in together. I wouldn't be shocked to see Gabe spend next year in Hartford with a couple call-ups, maybe they re-sign Reilly Smith for another year as a placeholder so GP can develop, and then give him a shot in 2026-27

Smith won't be re-signed unless maybe he's willing to take 1 mil or less. We simply won't have the cap space, and we have plenty of winger prospects to take his place.
