They did, 2 picks later. :DD Maybe he plays next year, but likely one more year of college.

He was talking about a guy that is worth a top5 pick not Sanderson. :sarcasm:. But Dorion will get another chance so maybe he will make it count this time like he did with Timmy and Tkatchuk ;)

I really wasn't happy that Stützle went to Ottawa of all teams but its great to see him succeed despite it being a dumpsterfire. Love when prospects look that electric so early on in their career. Usually a great predictor of future stardom. Hope he can stay healthy.

Looking at Lafreniere struggling hard under Quinn (even though that also is part on him and because he was always very overrated) and the Rangers and Buffalo and their whole organisation, it certainly could have been worse for Tim I guess...

Still sucks that the best two german prospects maybe ever went to Ottawa and Edmonton (and Seider to Detroit...) of all teams but if Stützle can ever become even close to Draisaitl, atleast the german NT could be tons of fun to watch going forward even though there is nothing after Seider on D unfortunately so far...

Interesting take. "Of all teams".

Sanderson will be more than worthy of #5 overall.

As a fellow German, I just want our top prospects to go to strong, stable organisation they can develop well and have a ton of longterm success with.
Lets just say Ottawa doesn't really fit the bill under Melnyk so I wasn't happy about it. Same as I wasn't happy at all when Drai went to Edmonton.
But yeah judging by what is happening in Buffalo right now it could maybe even have been worse even though I still think Melnyk is the worst owner by far and not capable of owning a succesful program longterm...

We will see on Sanderson. Dorion knows a lot more about prospects and he is certainly having a solid D+1 season but I wasn't a fan of the pick to say the least. But if Dorion is good at one thing, it is usually drafting so for Tims sake I hope it works out and he really proves me wrong.
Another top5 pick this year and Ottawa could really have a great future if not for Melnyk....

Just noticed that Stützle was a -13 over his first 13 games (until 13 February fwiw) and is +/-0 since then. Seems like progress, has anyone ever bothered to track the fancy stats in this regard? Would be interesting.

Tim was reportedly happy to go to Ottawa (though I obviously can't read his mind) because it's a rare pick who ends up on a top line and the #1 powerplay unit 15 games into his career.

Not every player is up to that kind of opportunity but Stutzle has been to date.

I understand the concern around long-term stability but ultimately that's what unrestricted free agency is for.

I am actually quite happy with where our prospects have ended up.

Draisaitl:
I am a little biased, because I always liked the Oilers, but Leon has demonstrated that he won't be bothered by what is going on in an organisation. There were some concerns about Prince Albert when he went to the WHL. As I recall they were not in great shape back then, but unlike some other Imports Leon had made the decision to report to any team that selects him, and did not have any deal worked out before the Import Draft. He was far too talented and too driven to fail, really. I doubt he would have become a better player on some other team.

Seider:
Again I am little biased, because I've also liked the Wings for a long time, and while the team is really bad right now, the organization is hardly what one would call a mess. And so far I don't see how Seider's development could have been handled any better, under the circumstances.

Stützle:
Here I am not biased. I've not had any positive or negative feelings towards the Sens, before they drafted Stützle. Now I like them, because he is on their team, and I don't think the Sens are a bad place for a young player at the moment. They've had some really good players before who did alright in Ottawa. What will happen down the road is another story, but right now it could actually benefit Tim to be on this young team. He is a natural leader and I am pretty sure it won't be long before he just takes over more of a leadership role on this team. He is not satisfied with getting better himself, he also wants to make his teammates better. And a bit like Draisaitl I think he is just too talented and too driven to fail.

Reichel:
I am not really a Blackhawks fan, but I have a lot of respect for the franchise. I heard there are some issues with the development of prospect in the AHL, but I am hopeful that they will still manage to develop Reichel properly. I did not expect the Hawks to play this well this season, so I guess there are still some people there who know what they're doing.

Peterka:
This is the one I am a little worried about. I still have a bit of a soft spot for the Sabres from the Hecht and Ehrhoff years, and they do have some very promising players I like a lot, and I always feel like they should be much better than their results.
Peterka doesn't have an ideal situation this season in the DEL, and is not performing at the level I would have expected from him, although he has been getting better as the season went on. And it is difficult at the moment to trust in the Sabres, but hopefully he will do well once he makes the move to the NHL/AHL.

So overall I am quite happy with where our top players/prospects have ended up.

I left out Bokk, because I don't think he will make it to the NHL, except maybe for a few games or at best for a few seasons as a Sulzer level type of player. Though I still hope he will prove me wrong,

Stutzle looked really good in the past two Sens vs. Canucks games I watched. Imo he was playing like a No. 1 centre in those games. Looked like the best player on either team at times. A lot of energy.

I thought he went too early to be honest. I didnt view Sanderson as a ideal 5th overall. not to say he wont be good but at the time felt like better options. could have prob traded back and still gotten Sanderson but at the end of the day Sens got their boy
I got a few friends that are sens fans and they were not happy in the slightest that Sanderson was taken,
They wanted Rossi or Perfetti

Meh, plenty of Sens fans were not happy with Brady @ 4OA.

They've come around.

Ideally I was looking for Stützle & Raymond, only because wanted to take a defencemen this year.

Askarov in 5th position. I don't understand why teams like Detroit, Ottawa and Buffalo didn't select him.

Nashville had a blast.

Askarov could already be No.1 in the SKA if there were no veteran goalkeepers installed.

But he is impressive. In terms of talent, this is the 3rd biggest talent in this draft.
However, Ottawa can take Wallstedt this year.
I know franchises don't take top 10 goalies anymore. But that doesn't mean they're right not to.

When a franchise keeper is available when no skater stands out and the franchise has a handicap as a keeper, you have to take a keeper like Askarov or Wallstedt.

Yeah, I really couldn't disagree more strongly.

Every franchise keeper ends up sucking eventually.

It's the worst position to invest heavily in, in terms of draft position and cap room.

Also have to disagree. I'm not totally against it, but in general, franchise goalies can be had elsewhere.

Look at the last 10 Vezina winners, and 9 of 10 weren't drafted in the first half of the first round
Look at the last 10 Norris winners, somewhat better (Hedman, Doughty), but also can find franchise d-men more often elsewhere
Look at the last 10 MVP/Art Ross winners and a MASSIVE skew to forwards taken top 5.

So top 5 picks should generally skew forward, then D, then goalie as a matter of finding franchise players.

I was hoping for Sanderson, and it’s looking really good so far.
I know a lot of leaf fans, they were not happy drafting Korshov over Carter Hart.

People weren't happy with Sanderson because he was a late riser and everyone had already heard about Raymond/Perfetti/Drysdale in that spot. The reality is that as much as they'd like to be one, fans aren't professional scouts. They haven't seen the entire draft crop to form an objective opinion.

For the record, since draft day, I think Sanderson has been a more impressive player than either Rossi or Perfetti.

Couldnt agree more. was odd to see Sandersons stock continue to rise even after hockey was shut down. I think Sanderson will become a very very good player for Ottawa and I wish Toronto had him I just wonder if he was the right player to select at 5th in like 5 years, only time will tell.

I would think given how Sanderson has performed this year he would have only further cemented why he was taken in the #5 slot. It’s really odd to see people come in here and bring up their old opinions as if it were fact and still is fact. Was a dominant performance at the NCHC championship.

It is unknown where Sanderson was ranked by actual team scouts all they had was a central scouting list to go off the reality is they still have no idea who should be drafted where
