How is he overall/defensively?

Does he play a complete game? Asking for a friend.

Whatever he lacks in defensive awareness he makes up for with his motor. Yeah, he’ll turn the puck over or fail to clear the zone every once in awhile, but he’s the first guy to get the puck back.

As with most rookies, he’s finding out what works and doesn’t work in the NHL. So there’s bound to be a couple of turnovers here and there, for a rookie I’d say his defensive game is average to a little below average.

He is however a winger, I see a lot of centre qualities that tell me he’s going to be a great defensive centre though. The way even on the wing he facilitates breakouts and evades forecheckers is a sign of great things to come in the defensive end.

Shit, is this kid ever good. Ottawa is going to be really scary in a few years and Timmy will be leading the offense. Very glad the Kings passed on him.
Yup. Byfield is a big boy with a Very High Floor but no doubt Stutzle has more talent.
They already had Turcotte/Villardi/Kupari in their Center prospect pool.
Stutzle/Turcotte line would be like having a sports car on the ice flying around at 200MPH with all that speed.

He doesn't really know what he's doing yet. I think that's partly attributable to needing to adjust to NA ice, plus the fact that he's fluctuated between C and wing the past few years. Also he's had some pretty egregious turnovers in the defensive zone, most of which have been high risk saucer passes that I don't think he realizes many NHLers have the hand eye coordination to intercept. Finally, like many young talented forwards he can be guilty of cheating a bit to try to generate odd man rush counter attacks.

Like another poster said, though, it's his work ethic that is arguably his most likeable quality and ultimately why I think he'll be a pretty complete player in a few years. He is pretty fearless about blocking shots and battles against much stronger players along the boards. I know he's maybe getting a bit of a reputation for embellishment but he also takes a lot of abuse (like Danault deliberately spearing him in the throat away from the play) and doesn't let it affect his enthusiasm. Finally, he's got great hands and edge work that have already let to a few nice take ways in the neutral zone.

So overall I'd say that the stats and the eye test both point to him being pretty poor defensively right now, but the eye test also makes me pretty optimistic for the future!

How's the career projection? Center or a winger?
Sens' longterm plan is for him to play center. He is playing wing right now to ease into the NHL

However he did play center last night when Colin White went down, and he didn't look out of place

He looks better every night think he has a real good shot at being the best player from this draft throughout his entire career.

Tkachuk and Stutzle are going to be a force. Add in a top 5 pick and Ottawa is gravy.

Already, at 19; opponents have to respect his shot, which gives him opportunities to do things like this.

I think it's more the fact that he created deception on that shot tonight and he has very good balance. He lifts his leg and leans into it in a way that even I thought he was going to shoot it but he is able to balance and adjust himself to make an amazing backhand pass.

Easier to see this deception with the behind the net camera angle in the broadcast.

Agreed and an absolute bonkers play for the youngest player in the league. Kid is becoming must see TV along with Kiril the Thrill

This kid is electric. Reminds me of Barzal, but also has his own unique thing going on.

Great player at 3OA.
