Corey Pronman's take coming into the year:
The Good: Laughton is a good all-around forward who has the puck possession elements a team would want in a scorer, to go along with the pace and grit of a pro. He exemplified the latter in his brief stint on the Flyers roster. He has above-average speed and hands. Laughton's best skills are his hockey sense and work ethic. He has good offensive instincts and an unusual level of awareness and defensive acumen for a U20. He also works very hard in battles, can dish out some good hits, and can pressure defenders effectively.

The Bad: Laughton does not have a glaring hole, other than continuing to gain strength, as well as gain more confidence offensively.

Projection: He could be a good second line forward, with good defensive value.

As for the claim he was mostly rated as a second rounder, here's the final rankings that year from all the major scouting publications & only one out of five had him graded as that.

McKenzie - 28th
NHL CS - 28th
ISS - 23rd
THN - 42nd
Button - 24th

In the OHL Coaches Poll/East Laughton was voted #1 in Best Penalty Killer, Best in Faceoffs, #2 in Smartest Player, Best Defensive Forward, Most Dangerous in Goal Area and Best Shot, and #3 in Hardest Shot. He finished top 3 in more categories than any player in the league.

He is a very good player, hope flyers polish him up nicely into another Mike Richards-type.

Second line seems like a great spot for him. He can create a lot on his own, demands the puck and is a all energy, effort type of player.

Not overly big, plays at such a high pace and with the right emotion that will translate well to intense NHL pressure. It's crazy seeing him and Jenner come through Oshawa, both very very similar in regards to their attributes.

I think the question with Laughton continues to be, can he contribute offensively at the NHL level. I don't think anyone has that answer yet. Very similar to Riley Sheahan in that regard. A player who was drafted in the 20s knowing full well he'd end up contributing as a two way player in the league but people questioned whether his offensive game would come around. In his case, it has. Laughton is similar in that regard. We won't know until he does though.

So as it stands I think it's fair to say he projects as a 3c with 2c upside if he can show the ability to contribute points. He could've been drafted anywhere from where he was to 40th. The Flyers seem to think he will.

Time will tell.

Time to Bump this.

He was steady in his first 2 pre-season games. Did nothing flashy, but that isn't expected with the way he plays.

Now tonight in game 3, had 1g 2a for 3pts and had 4 hits.

Will probably start the year in the AHL, but don't be surprised if he ends the year in Philly.

Yeah, Laughton was excellent tonight. So were Gostisbehere and Morin. Very impressive... all three.

they did look good but its just a preseason game against a team that just wasn't in it tonight , meanwhile they are playing their hearts out.

I don't think they will make the team nor should they, but laughton has a real chance to eventually make the team this year.

He has now played in the last 9 games for the Flyers getting around 14 minutes, and scored his first two NHL points in the last two games with two assists. His first career goal shouldn't be too far away.

He should have a lot more points, but his line just can't seem to score any goals. I'm extremely impressed, he is much better than i anticipated and i definitely see mike richards upside in him. His ability to dangle has been crazy, i think he is actually one of the best puck handlers and skaters on the team already. The only puck handlers better than him are giroux and voracek, and skaters probably only voracek

I actually think he's overdue for it. He should actually get on a roll pretty soon.

Don't look now but someone is beginning to look pretty confident playing in the NHL. Kid is going to be a very good all around centre. Time to hand him his #21.

Flyers gt a beauty. I hate that little **** which means hes playing his game perfectly

Yup he was extremely impressive last night. He looked comfortable and confident. Kid will definitely be a player.

He was smacking the Leafs around even before the game started, he clearly showed the Leafs have no players like him in their system.

I think he has a little more offensive upside than what people originally gave him credit for when he was first drafted.

He's a very good skater who is just an absolute menace on the forecheck, has good hands and a very good release on his wrister. Not elite in anything but + in a lot of categories. Fun player to watch when he's buzzing out there.

I think he can be a solid 2C that does everything. Two way pivot at ES, and plays both special teams. He also has intangibles to boot.
