Bob has him at 22nd. He's still getting talked about as a first rounder.

He isn't the most engaged player and hasn't really produced at a high-end level. He's fine for the late first though, although, I probably wouldn't take him there.

I hope he isn't taken there as a Sens fan... I don't think the Sens take him at 22 .. later in the first round imo

Excited Oilers took him!! Anyone have a good scouting report on him and why he dropped?

Very Good pick up for the Oilers IMO. Got value in this pick. He's a #2C more likely a upper tier #3C. Nothing wrong with this when McDavid is #1. And Draisaitl is #2. Really like the Oilers top 2 picks this draft. Got a solid D man and C tandem with top 2 picks.

He has been noticeable (for the right reasons) in every game he's played in. He is defensively responsible and an excellent skater.

Not sure about an opening night roster spot (not sure who he would displace), as some are saying, but an ELC should be guaranteed.

Excited to see what he brings next year with a bit more time to develop.

I understand he displayed good defensive abilities, how was his offence ? Creativity and so on ? Thanks

Seems pretty creative. Reminds me of rookie RNH. Good vision, passing but not a great shot.
Has 3pts in the preseason so far.. all assists.

He’s a fantastic passer, wish he would shoot the puck more though.

What has people raving is his speed and his responsible defensive game though as you note. He plays like a 5 year veteran already, he’s just a good all around hockey player in all 3 zones on the ice.

This guy is looking like a complete steal from the 2nd round. A part of me hopes he makes it for the whole year because it's been a while since a 2nd round pick made the NHL straight from the draft (and played the whole year) and was not an over-ager. I think Ryan O'Rielly was the last one.

I’m not sure he will last the year if he does start with the team but he’s been a heck of a find. Didn’t look overwhelmed at all last night.

I doubt he will make opening day roster just due to the amount of contracts the Oilers have already but I'm rooting for it. They would probably have to place Caggiula on waivers which I have no issues with.

RNH - McDavid - Rattie
Lucic - Draisaitl - Yamamoto
Khaira - Strome - Puljujarvi
McLeod - Brodziak - Rieder
Extras: Kassian, Aberg

I think the above lineup gives the Oilers the best chance to succeed next season. A lot of speed, skill, youth, and enthusiasm mixed with veterans. McLellan will probably mash up the lines but as long as McLeod plays against weaker competition, he should be good.

Unless you are going to give a kid legitimate top 9 minutes, don't keep him up. I believe that should hold true for pretty much any player who hasn't had a year of AHL experience. You don't develop players by giving them less than 10 minutes a game at 5v5.

IMO this is the perfect reason that the AHL should allow one U-20 spot per team. McLeod would learn a lot more playing 2C minutes in the AHL than spending another year in Mississauga.

He's not above the CHL level. You start draining the pool you are just changing the problem. Players will end up less ready because they don't play as good competition. It helps the younger guys like Byfield to play against someone like McLeod, and McLeod benefitted by getting the same challenges when he was 16 and 17.

You say that, but the Leafs have exploited the AHL’s ‘European trained’ rule more than anyone. It’s how you’ve been able to send underaged players like Kapanen, Nylander, and Liljegren to the AHL - which was better for their development than playing in lesser leagues - and might do it again with Sandin, and I didn’t hear you complaining about diluting the talent pool of their home leagues.

IMO, either a U-20 of any nationality should be eligible for a spot, or no one should be.
