For his age, he looks very good defensively, maybe he was a little shy and took the game less, but he kept up with the pace, he can also win face-offs, maybe they really see him as a center. One year in WHL, then NHL.
Yeah, I thought he was the best Center in the defensive zone on the entire roster for the pre-season and prospects tourney. He had very good positioning.

He didn't show a ton of flash offensively. Maybe played a bit conservative?

Not what I was expecting,

Well, I think he looked good on offense in the tournament of prospects, in general, their line with Kisakov and Weissbach worked great. In the first team, he mostly passed when the team went on the attack, but he also had shots and chances. He also didn't see line up with guys like Skinner, Quinn, Olofsson and Tuch. I think it would be interesting to see that.

I think the defensive side of the puck at his age is definitely something we haven't seen from a ton of prospects. A lot of guys look good defensively in Juniors but seem outmatched at higher levels. It's awesome that he didn't look outmatched at all and his defensive game should translate well as he develops. Who knows, it may have even been the direction given to him by the coaching staff for these games.

I think the offensive side of the puck will come with time. He was still a puck hound, and was not shy about battling guys in the corners and along the walls. A kid that works as hard as he was on the ice should eventually see that translate into more scoring as he gains experience.

Savoie showed fine, but there is finally depth and a numbers game at work here. His three preseason games and practice with the big club should be enough at this point to give him an idea where he needs to go. Don't need the 9 games. Keeping him means sending a waiver exempt player to the AHL who likely earned the right to be there, or risking an asset thru waivers to make the room. They did the right thing.

Exactly. I think it'd do more harm than good for the morale of the current group. They finally are starting to build a culture where you seemingly have to earn your way onto the ice. Quinn and Peterka look infinitely more ready for the show, as do several others that have already been sent to Rochester.

I didn't mean he was bad offensively. We had a lot of players look good on offense and he was one of them. I meant that he didn't stand out above the rest of the prospects on offense..

He did stand out above everyone else defensively.

We were always told Reinhart had that 200' game but we never really saw it. We've seen it with Savoie already.

The Ice aren't missing the playoffs with Savoie, Geekie, Milne, Benson, Lambos, a productive OA in McClennon. They're in.
Seriously. 3 gifted natural centers in their top-6 - Savoie picked at #9, Geekie at #11, and Benson an almost certain top-10 pick this year.

Stacked.

I wanted to see Savoie get a few games in before going back to Winnipeg, but the Sabres focused on finding best fits for Quinn, JJ, and Krebs is better for those kids, and for the team.

What do you not like about Savoie! Is he a slightly undersized kid yes. But he plays hard, he's fast, he's got forecheck in his game, and he's an exciting player.

The thing is Quinn and Peterka didn't just earn their spots in camp; they earned them all last season when they were decimating the AHL.
Yeah. If you want to go from juniors to the NHL, you need a monster camp to make it. And he just didn't have it. He gets to try again next season.
