i get sending him down.
just a little surprised he was in the mass list vs getting one more game with more nhlers.

Eh, what does one more semi-NHLer game really do though? Risk an injury that puts him being a possible WJC participant in doubt? I don't see the benefit of one more game. He came to camp, showed some nice things that he's know for regarding puck play, showed some very nice things for his off-puck and defensive play that indicate he could be a lot closer than not, and can go back to crush the WHL. It's fine.

i think it’s a much better learning experience for a high pick who you plan on him being on the 23 man roster in 23/24 to get a couple real nhl games

Again, it's a risk to what they view as a long-term asset. One more preseason game serves no further purpose.

hopefully his plane back to W doesn’t crash….he doesn’t get into a car accident.

he’s going to be playing whl games before WJC occurs

stuff happens… getting injured is not an excuse

And there is no reason to have a guy coming off a shoulder injury playing against some NHLers and rando's next week for a game no matter how pedantic your point gets.

Oh yeah, I thought he showed just fine. Just didn't see anything to warrant a 9 gamer.

Maybe after the WHL season though.
For his age, he looks very good defensively, maybe he was a little shy and took the game less, but he kept up with the pace, he can also win face-offs, maybe they really see him as a center. One year in WHL, then NHL.

I don't think the Sabres had any intention of keeping Savoie past 9 games, so at that point are you just giving games for the sake of giving games? (and you have to make the corresponding roster move to keep a spot open for him). This group has been very consistent about being patient with young guys, they'll let Savoie keep rounding out his game, and then next year see where he's at.

These guys kept Quinn/Peterka down the whole year even when playing guys like Bjork and Jankowski. This is their MO.

I would have loved to see Savoie get a few games in, but sending him back to Winnipeg is the prudent decision.

That might imply Krebs, Quinn, and JJ will all be on the roster to start the season, and the Sabres didn't want to make the logjam of young forwards any worse.

There are certain prospects you can play in your bottom 6 and still get a good idea of what they’re all about and give them a chance to get some insight into what they’ll need to do to be successful in the NHL. I don’t think that’s Savoie.

Well said, Savoie is a top six only player for me. In a pinch, maybe you play him in a center role on the third line. But, it's better to let him go put the WHL under siege, similar to how Cozens went back for a season. I could have seen Cederqvist, or Weissbach staying in camp a little longer to challenge for bottom six roles. Based on their play style.

He definitely did not do enough to warrant making the roster out of camp, even if just for the 9 games. This team is in a different mode right now, and it's time for our more developed players to get their turn. There'd just be no way to justify Savoie in the lineup over Quinn, Peterka or even a guy like Biro IMO. This is a perfect example of a chance to slow roll development and not rush a prospect.

This year we should finally figure out what Mitts will be as well. If he doesn't turn out, I think his roster spot likely opens up next year, along with a guy like Olofsson who just feels like a placeholder at the moment. If he looks more ready next training camp, he'll at least get the 9 game tryout. We have the luxury of not needing to rush him, plus he's super important to our future Center spine. They can't mess this one up.

I don’t think there is a real distinction between top 6 and top 9 on this team.

Reason I wanted him to play some nhl games is so he has a feeling of what it’s like.

i can’t find any clear clarity on the issue for 23/24.

My understanding on CHL vs NHL team rights is if he is turning 20 before jan 1 or playing 4 years.

if 20/22 season occurred then 22/23 would be year 4. Unsure if next year is still counted as year 4 For this purpose.

in 23/24 it could be buffalo or CH….no Rochester.

I believe they have to play at least 25 games in the CHL for it to count as a season. Savoie only played 22 games his first year along with no games at all in 20-21. I'm guessing the 22 games his first season was intentional.

What benefit does a 9 gamer playing 10 minutes a night provide? You already have a more NHL ready prospect in Peterka not really having much room on this roster let alone a 18 year old undersized kid who just got drafted. Go score 100+ in the W, light up the WJC and make the case for next year.

If I remember correctly, a lot of us assumed that Reinhart was told to add some lower body strength and he didn't just completely dominate that last year in the WHL but did come into camp following with more physical strength. I know, different player and staff with a lot of assumptions but I'm hoping the same occurs with Savoie.

No need to dominate the CHL at this point, just add some in-season man strength in the lower body to keep yourself safe and get to spots where you can show off the skill set.

That only happens if Winnipeg completely misses the WHL playoffs.

Winnipeg's last regular season game is March 25. The Sabres have a game on March 27 and then 8 regular season games after that.

Those 22 games were as a younger player. He tried for exemption status, was refused, then later that season was given it. So it was unintentionally intentional.
