“Heavily defended”
“Poor production”

20 NHL games or so under his belt.
Yes to this point it hasn’t been good. Hence why he isn’t NHL ready. The guy gets one assist and people come in claiming that’s proof he should have been 1st overall, but the like 17 other games he didn’t get one are all just because of linemates. It’s really weird.

At what point in his development will Byfield be considered a bust? Surely it's not now. So when do you think the bust tag will apply? Next year? Two years?

No idea, it sure isn’t now. But he’s also FAR from showing he should have been first overall too

Oh ? Where did you read that.
Can you send those quotes ?

He’s had his fair share of good games btw and also several horrible ones. Hence why he is in the NHL learning. You’re just following the crowd.

It’s literally on the last page where he says that is why he’s better than Lafreniere

any legit prospect should be given three seasons

So you're saying by 21, and after the first 3 seasons of NHL development, you know if a prospect is a bust? Good thing you don't work for an NHL franchise.. all players develop differently. You will have an indication of their progression, but most prospects (not counting the obvious standouts), you want to give them between the ages of 23-25 before pulling out that bust tag.

No, I wasn't very clear with that statement. I didn't mean that they should be declared busts. After 3 years in the league you should see the prospect turning a corner and making some progress toward consistency. As you said "indications of their progression". You should also be getting a much better read as to what they might become after three seasons as well. In no way should they be labelled a bust unless it is quite obvious that they are hopelessly overmatched and will never be competitive.

On the same night a player(Raymond) drafted after Byfield at #4 had a 3 point night(1 goal and 2 assists) to up his total to 42 points.

He’s 19 years old, with a raw game but terrific tools, and already a borderline NHLer. There are some prodigies who are NHL stars at 18-20, but most players don’t become higher impact NHLers until 21+, and many not until their mid 20s. Byfield has LOTS of time.

Anyone considering him a bust if he’s still a borderline NHLer next year, at 20, would be nuts.

I agree. A player with a similar build and tools at 6'5" former Redwing Anthony Mantha also had difficulty adjusting to the NHL early in his career not making the Redwings until 2 years after he was drafted and leading to Redwings VP Devellano making this comment:

“Very, very, very disappointing,” said Devellano, per FOX Sports Detroit. “And I say that with a lot of sadness. Coming out of junior, we had such high hopes for him.”

Mantha eventually became a top line forward for Detroit leading the team in goals by his 4th year with the Redwings.

The big difference is that Mantha was drafted 20th overall in his draft, so he didn't bring the same amount of expectation as Byfield has after being drafted 2nd overall. If we ignore how high in the draft he was picked and just consider that he still has all the tools to succeed, Byfield might surprise us a few years down the road.
