Watch the red deer goalie on Patrick's pass, he was totally expecting Patrick to continue behind the net, the goalie didn't know Patrick had passed it behind his back, total confusion is seen in his body language, very unexpected pass!! Play of the week?

He absolutely rocketed that shot, and then that pass was unreal.

Optically, he reminds me of John Tavares. He's got a soft pair of hands with a quick release. And like Tavares, he could use some work on his skating.

But he lacks the same level of anticipation and IQ Tavares displayed.

As far as 1st OA picks go, he seems to be fairly below average. Definitely not on the tier of top picks like Crosby, Kane, Ovechkin, Malkin, McDavid, Eichel, Matthews, Tavares, Ekblad, or Stamkos.

He'll probably end up closer to the bottom of the list of 1st OAs if I had to guess. That's not a criticism, he's still in great company, but I'm not sure if he'll be an elite talent.

I think he's a bigger, stronger version of Toews. May not have the elite talent of Tavares, but the type of two way talent player that teams will build around and win championships
I think his hockey iq is underrated, he is often on a different level to his teammates. Selfishly, I hope he isn't #1 pick in 2017 because I want him in Brandon for a 4th season!!

Well even if he doesn't go first theres still a good chance he makes the NHL right away. He could be like a Reinhart though and be too good for junior but not yet quick enough for the NHL. Hard to tell with two way players, my guess is that like Monohan did he sticks because he will have already played 3 seasons. Still has lots of time to develop though.

I really don't see a way that Patrick doesn't get picked first overall.

If the draft were held today? Absolutely Patrick would be selected first.

But like others have said, there is still a lot of hockey left to be played before he can be drafted, and the gap is nowhere near big enough to think it would be impossible for another player to surpass him.

Can anyone tell me about this kid? I've seen people arguing that he would challenge for 1st overall in THIS years draft, which is a pretty lofty expectation. I've never seen him play and I'll be the first to admit that, but is there more to him than his stat line? While it's good, it doesn't blow me away like a consensus 1st overall picks stats generally do.

Well that is a stat line of a 16/17 year old. Compare his draft-1 season to guys like RNH, Johansen, Barzal, Reinhart, Draisaitl, and you'll be very surprised to see how well Patrick is doing.

There's also 7 pages talking about his game. He's big, he plays in all situations, he can shoot well and is an excellent passer. He's very strong on his skates and is already one of the better offensive players in the league. He's a leader on the team at a young age, and gives you 5th and 6th efforts. He's the top forward on one of the best teams, and bundles that package with a great defensive IQ.

He's a coach and scouts dream. That's why he's so highly praised. Only weakness for me is he doesn't shoot enough, as I mentioned on an earlier page.

From what I've seen, that's nonsense. He'd have a hard cracking the top 5. He's more in the Chychrun and Tkachuk realm than the Matthews / Finns realm. The top 3 of this draft is probably the best top 3 we've seen since 2009, when Tavares, Hedman, and Duchene went 1-2-3.

No, it's the stat line of a 17 year old. Patrick didn't play a game as a 16 year old this season so comparing his numbers to Johansen, RNH and Barzal's numbers is misleading considering they played as 16 year olds their entire draft -1 season.

Who's got a guess for projection first overall for 2018? This kid doesn't seem to be an offensive machine compared to the 1st overalls of the past 2 drafts. More offense!

It's tougher on Patrick when you compare him with Hopkins, because Hopkins was 5 months older than Patrick at the start of their respective 16 year old seasons
If you compare apples to apples, Even strength goals, Patrick is ahead of Nugent Hopkins. hopkins had 37 even strength goals in 154 career games, Patrick already has 39 even strength goals in only 127 games. So that's .31 ES gpg v .24 ES gpg
Barzal has 32 ES goals after 150 games, .21 ES gpg
Reinhardt had 45 after 150 games, .3 ES gpg

How is that tougher on Patrick? Patrick was bigger and more physically mature during his rookie season than Hopkins was during his draft season.

I just think being 5 months younger is significant. Even if you disagree with that, you can't disagree that Patrick scores at a lot higher rate than RNH. Dube is scoring at the same rate as Patrick, then there is a drop off to Howden, then another drop to Benson and Steel
Patrick's real value is in his complete game, a la Toews. Is that enough to make him a first overall, I'm not sure.....Should be somewhere in the top three and hopefully makes his team really, really happy!

Kid reminds me of Getzlaf more than anyone else. A good playmaker, has the ability to shoot or pass effectively. Shows a complete game as well. Has good strength and is a good skater and not afraid to play physical if needed. Shows he is capable of being a leader.

i **** you not, it's been said more than once prior to the WJC which has obviously caused some recency bias.

Sniped another two goals in Moose Jaw Tuesday night. Starting to score regularly lately instead of all the assists.....

Who are these people saying that? Anyone credible or just randoms on twitter?

In the context of 1st OAs over the last decade, he looks unspectacular.

They're both from Winnipeg as well.
