Faceoffs? Is he good 2 way? Center?
In before this thread turns into what everyone expects of blue chip prospects on Canadian teams to shed some information.
Suzuki can and does play Centre at the junior level, but the last couple of years has been paired with a much better defensive player in Kevin Hancock so Nick has played mostly on the wing.
That said, he's already a very polished all around player. Has played and can excel in all game situations. Good enough speed and hockey sense to be a reliable penalty killer, loads of offensive vision and creativity for the powerplay, and complete enough to be used at all times five on five. Has an underrated shot and goal scoring instincts, but it remains to be seen how well that will translate in the pros.
Last season despite his gaudy point totals I thought he really struggled at times. When Gadjovich (VAN) left for the World Junior camp, the team was in a downward spiral and Nick played really uninspiring hockey for a few weeks. He turned it around post trade deadline, but I think there's still room for improvement in his compete level in junior.
When he's on though, he's one of the best players in the OHL.
As for NHL projection, I think he tops out as a middle six winger that can play anywhere in your lineup because of his versatility, while providing complimentary scoring. I think there's little doubt that he'll be an NHL player, it's just a question of where he fits in a lineup.
If he is able to play centre full-time in the NHL eventually, I think his upside is a Mikael Backlund type (albeit smaller). Backlund like Suzuki was more of a scorer at the junior level, but had enough other elements to make him a valuable player while he developed, eventually becoming the force that he is now. I could see that prime of his career offence in Suzuki too.
Now, please for the love of god Montreal, send this guy back to junior or I will be so bitter.
