C Mason McTavish - Peterborough Petes, OHL (2021, 3rd, ANA)

The more I watch Mason, the more I realized how wrong I was with wanting Eklund.
I don't think it was wrong in this draft on wanting Eklund. He will be a really really good player I think and quite likely will earn much more points. McTavish is a different player and maybe a ''safer bet'' for the playoffs.

Nothing against Eklund, who I think is a great talent, but you are looking at completely different styles of players. Eklund will likely get more points than McTavish, but McTavish will contribute to wins in more ways than Eklund can.

I really like Mason McTavish. He has good puck protection, can score in numerous ways, solid postionally, good stickwork, etc. I think he will be a really good top 6 forward whether it's on the wing or at center. With that being said, I do prefer William Eklund since he is one of the few prospects in the draft I could see becoming an elite NHL player.

Man I really wanted him available at #10 for the Sens, had our eyes on him for a while and he was ranked outside of the top 10 all year long, but rose so damn quick just a few weeks before the draft. That WJC performance dashed my hopes for good. Good pickup by the Ducks.

NHL level shot there. He looks angry when he shoots. I still think Kesler is a good comp the wrist shot is nasty, both will grind you down, not bad down from shit, and carry a line with speed/skill.

I think everyone knew that Eklund will be a better scorer down the road. Ducks bet on other elements of the game with McTavish (physical center with leadership, shot, agitation, and FO%) – which we will need down the road.
Not a fan of drafting based on team needs, but I was hoping for either Eklund or McTavish. The worst thing is that Eklund got drafted by the Sharks

But let's not turn this into a pissing match. Both are good players and I think Eklund for sure will have more points in his career.

Regarding BigMac: even though he scored, his ice time was reduced in his 2nd game compared to his first one. And only 3 other forwards played less than him – all while Getzy, Rico, Silf, Terry were sitting out. Plus we have Grant and Groulx as well (which I think are fringe 4th liners at this point in time). If we send him down we also have a better waiver situation where we could likely get away with waiving just one forward (Volkov?).
He also was put on the wing to start last night – a sign that I could imagine is the team getting him as much as possible time on ice with NHL players before he gets sent down.

I thought he looked lost at times.

I'd send him to a mens euro league not juniors.

If he was loaned by Peterborough, no, he'd need to be loaned by them again, which they wouldn't do while playing
Exactly right. For this reason, AHL is not an option for McTavish this season either. I'm sure Peterborough wants him back and the only way he's not playing with the Petes is if the Ducks keep him.

Agreed.

I’ve no doubt Peterborough would be thrilled to have him back, but let’s be honest here. If he’s returned to junior hockey, Peterborough is just an immediate landing spot. He’ll be traded to a contending team at some point, which would be a win-win-win — for the Pete’s, the acquiring team, and MT.
