C Leon Draisaitl (2014, 3rd, EDM) II

The Jets sent Morrissey back to PA and he seems to be developing fine.

That's their prerogative.

PA is a terrible team with suspect development abilities. GMCM absolutely made the right choice not sending him back unless his rights were traded. He'll benefit a lot more going on a run with the Rockets. Same with Morrisey.

Having Draisaitl and Morrissey on Kelowna will help their development no doubt but when Buffalo sent Reinhart back to Kootenay, I believe they were out of the playoffs as well.

Intentionally keeping a player in the NHL because their junior team isn't good is just a bad idea.

There a reason Morrissey was probably happy to go to the Rockets.

Think it's good for both prospects to be reunited, seemed to have good chemistry. I notice Draisaitl looks to the point/high slot lots to set up the shot, unfortunately the offenses from the Oilers blue line is horrendous. Think thats a product of playing with Morrissey.

Have any of you considered maybe Draisaitl didn't want to go to the WJCs? This was floated in the media a few weeks ago and apparently did happen with Seguin and the Bruins in 2010.

Crying about the spirit of the game. Good god. :shakehead
The bruins won the cup. The oilers have one win in 20 or so games. Different circumstances.

He probably doesn't want to get sent down either. It's happening.

So terrible they developed draisatl into a top 3 pick and Morrissey a top 15 pick. Lolz.

Love the excuses. Keep them coming.

True but Monahan was also one of the Flames top scorers and finished with 22 goals despite missing some games.

Draisaitl is on pace for about 4 or 5 goals?

Don't get me wrong, I know Monahan was much more pro ready and gave them every reason to keep him up during the 9 game trial (didn't he have 8 or 9 points in those first 9 games), but the point is, everyone knew the Flames were going to be a bad team last year, so I don't see how it's any different in the sense you're throwing a young player to the wolves.

I wasn't a fan of the Oil keeping Draisaitl past the 9 game mark, and I do think they've handled the situation poorly, but the way some people are talking in this thread is ridiculous, as though the kids career is over already. Aside from using up a year of his ELC, this could possibly be the best course of development for him - play nearly half a season in the NHL, get a real understanding of the areas he needs to work on, play the remaining half of the season on a WHL powerhouse where he should absolutely dominate after playing the game at the NHL pace.

The Oilers didn't send him to the WJC, perhaps because Draisaitl didn't want to go. They've chosen to send him back to the WHL instead. Who cares?

fwiw it was reported earlier in the season that Draisaitl didn't want to go back to Prince Albert and was instead going to Europe if he didn't make the Oilers. McKenzie also said back in October the Oilers weren't concerned with him playing ten games, it was the the 39-game limit they were looking at, which is what Draisaitl is near right now.

The posts about him being ruined are absurd. He didn't even play half a season in the NHL. Now he's going to a team that will probably dominate its competition the rest of the year. Relax.

the fans on hfboards.com do care.

In everyone's point of view, they should have just loaded him to Germany, give him a chance to fight for his country,(although it wouldn't have helped much anyways) but that's besides the point. He was not fit for the NHL from day 1. Edmonton is a joke of an organization. It's like flipping the middle finger to Germany.

Germany wouldn't be contenders with or without Draisaitl but I think they would have won tonight against Slovakia with him.

There truly is no other organization in the National Hockey League like the Oilers. It is like gathering up and sending all the smokers on the Earth to a planet made up entirely out of nitroglycerin. Makes no sense.

Now it looks like Germany has a decent chance of being relegated due to the stupidity of what to do with Draisaitl.

Okay now we are blaming the Oilers for Germany possibly getting relegated. Haha, I'm outta here. This thread is embarrassing, just like 95% of Edmonton-related threads on here. Good job guys.

so wait, now the PA Raiders are to blame for the Oilers leaving a kid obviously not ready for the NHL to play a 2nd line center role?

Those Raiders are dastardly.

What is so tough to understand about this? It appears he didn't want to go to the WJC, and who can blame him? He's been there twice, they aren't a good team, and he's currently making money playing pro. I wouldn't have had a problem with him going, but there's no real benefit either (other than getting a break from the Oil, but he's going to get that now anyway). Why the Oil kept him past 9 games I do not know, but it appears they had the 39 game cutoff as the target all along. In the off-season, Draisaitl said he wouldn't return to PA, and would instead look to play in Europe. Had he chose a German pro league, would it have been any more beneficial than being in over his head in the NHL? I doubt it. There's a good chance this was the plan from the get go if he was to stay in North America. Collect an NHL pay check while getting an extended look and reevaluate at the 39 game mark, where he'd return to junior if he wasn't holding his own at the NHL level.

Could it have been handled better? Sure, but again, some people are making way too much of this. We don't know what the discussions between Draisaitl and MacT were regarding where he was willing to play. If it was SEL, they should have just let him go there. If it was back home in Germany, then I'm glad everything played out the way it did.

Better late than never

I feel much better for him going to what looks like a winning atmosphere, bring some fire next year

It appears he didn't want to go, because he was in the NHL, not getting send down to junior 3 weeks later.

Are people for some reason automatically assuming Draisaitl wanted to play in the World Juniors?
