From an Oiler fan who has seen everyone of Draisaitl's games so far, including pre-season and prospects tournament.

He's been invisible for the most part. Offensively, this is not a good thing. Defensively, this is a good thing. Hasn't created much offence, but you see flashes of his Thornton-like passing game show through here and there. Defensively, he's in the right positions, battles hard in board battles and holds his own.

Seen him get to open spots offensively for great chances but hasn't buried much yet.

Speed is odd and exactly what many has said pre-draft. He definitely looks slow, but its deceptive because when he has his jets on he looks to have great top end speed. I assume this must be a stamina thing, and will only get better with time. He has the ability to skate fast just doesn't do it very often.

The one thing that was his main strength in his junior game as touted by scouts was his ability to protect the puck. And make time and space for himself. This hasn't worked very well at the NHL level. He gets knocked off the puck because he simply isn't strong enough yet. He's strong for his age group, but not strong enough in relation to NHL players.

Physically, he WILL mature. It took almost 4 years for Nuge to mature physically, and he's still developing. I don't think that time frame will be the same for Leon as he's starting with a bigger, more filled out frame.

Once he does mature though, look out. Because his vision and passing are things you just can't develop in players. Speed and strength you can. Vision and passing will make him an elite player. It just won't be this year, and probably won't be next year either. His development curve will be slow in the first year, I'm predicting it to be similar but slower than Thornton's progression.

Sounds a bit like Couturier in 11-12, but without the benefit of starting off on a really good team.

I predicted how Draisaitl's development before even the season started... underwhelming. Not a surprise considering Edmonton just sucks the potential of talented players like a black hole with a few exceptions.

Like he'd be playing better on another team. He's not ready to be a good player.

I don't think so. He doesn't have the foot speed or awareness to be an effective player in the NHL right now. He's a player that will thrive in the future if he properly developed slowly through juniors and the AHL.

I agree. His troubles remind me very much of Grigorenko's, not that Grigorenko has yet proven himself but he's come such a long way and has looked like a player in his recent call-up. Draisaitl is a big boy but his physique needs a lot of work which will improve his skating in conjunction with some skating coaching. I don't think he'll be effective next season either but after that he might suddenly be a good NHLer.

I guarantee by this time next year half of these boards will be acting like his trade value is a 2nd round pick.

If edmonton knew what was good for him, theyd send him down if he got traded to kelowna.

But, this is edmonton so they will probably continue to to let him drown. It makes me sad that you can visibly see the team slowly killing certain prospects and players. They deserve better.

‏@NHLbyMatty I'm hearing Leon Draisaitl's junior rights have been traded from Prince Albert to Kelowna. Up to parties to announce it.#oilers.

Has four more games left until an RFA year is burnt on his deal.. timing makes a lot of sense for him to go down. If they send him, Kelowna should just steam roll their way to the Memorial Cup.

If they're sending him down now, they should've let him play at the World Juniors, too....

Agreed.

I think the comparisons to Gretzky and Nowitzki (as far as the importance for his sport in Germany is concerned) before he even played a single NHL game didn't help either.

Maybe, but I think they were a minor factor compared to the mess that is the Edmonton Oilers at the moment.

He has the necessary drive and ambition to work on his game and if he can get his confidence back, he should be fine for the future.

The rich get richer. Can anyone stop Kelowna now?

I'm curious who/what they'll be giving up. 1st, 2nd, and a 16-year-old? 17-year-old? Are Dube and Smart off limits?

Ya Ill be curious to see what they give up. Kelowna seems to always somehow load up on players and not really give up much. Its just for his rights cause technically he hasn't been sent back yet so I bet they don't give up much.

Similar situation when Portland acquired Mathew Dumbas rights and then Minnesota sent him back to join the Winterhawks. Portland gave up a below average 18 year old and 3 conditional 2nd round picks. There where a lot of conditions to those picks like for example it changes to a 3rd if he isn't returned by a certain date etc etc... So Ill be curious what they gave up to get him

Probably less than what they gave up for Morrissey, as Draisatl hasn't been sent down.

exactly.. they are technically just trading for his rights. If Draisaitl was actually sent back to PA and then PA started shopping him, they could receive a kings ransom. But cause its just his rights, it will be similar to what Portland traded for Dumba

Dumba was a poor add for Portland though, his turnovers cost them the series against the EOK.

FYI, there are zero rumours or any source that says Oilers are ever going to send him down this season. All that happened (or going to happen) is a WHL trade for rights without probably knowing any insider information from the Oilers. The Oilers brass will definitely see his rights got traded to the Rockets, see how good the team is, and maybe discuss that if a potential Memorial Cup appearance will help with his development when burning a year of his ELC. But technically, the Rockets have to win the Chynoweth Cup before even thinking of a MC. Remember how good the Blades were for two seasons just to get swept in one and lose fairly early in the second.

Poor kid. He clearly needs some time in a developmental league.

Draisaitl will be sent down. The announcement won't happen until the WJC is done. The Rockets already at the max for imports. So if they want to add Drai they have to trade 1 of them and per rules 17 year old imports can't be moved so that only leaves 1 name who is playing for Swiss that can be moved.

Completely agree. Really, he never should have been up in the first place. Talented kid with a lot of upside, but also clearly not ready. Needs to improve his skating a lot to be able to keep up with the play, needs to get stronger (especially in the legs) to be able to utilize his size properly, needs to improve his defensive awareness, and needs to get a lot better on draws.

All of that is fine, he's just 19 so lacking a complete game is pretty standard. Ekblad and Draisaitl are the only kids from the 2014 draft to play a significant number of NHL games so far this year, and it should really only be Ekblad. It's the rare exceptions, not the common case, that teenagers can be effective in the NHL, and Draisaitl pretty clearly isn't one of those exceptions. Most players aren't NHL ready until ~21-23, I expect the same to be true for Draisaitl, but the Oilers really should have recognized this in camp, or AT LEAST before the start of the WJCs. Having him struggle and be overmatched in the NHL, then sending him can be pretty tough on a player's confidence. Way better to let him slowly develop and truly earn his spot by improving his game over time, than force him into the spotlight as a teenager and make him feel out of place.

People can criticize the Oil for not sending Drai to WJC but kids been there twice before.

Also, indications are that he was asked if he wanted to attend for the 3rd time but he wanted to stay in the NHL and play. And you can't blame him for wanting to gain more experience and earn a paycheque.
