C Leo Carlsson (2023, 2nd, ANA)

NHL teams have scouting resources that none of pronman, wheeler, hockeyprospect.com, mckeens etc come even remotely close to. Yet people seem to think the latter ones form the "consensus".

Bob’s final rankings had Fantilli at #2 9/10 times.

I thought they were very close but plenty of people liked to say there’s a clear gap

The reports were that the league was 50/50 Carlsson at #2.

Even so, I don't really care what the consensus was. I trust the Ducks amateur scouts more then any other team.

You know Bobs list is the best and the info is gotten by the actual pros.
That list had it 9/10 Fantilli

& as I’ve said I believe in the end this went the right way for both teams at 2 and 3

Edit, I also put money on Carlsson just before the draft because the odds favoured Fantilli so heavily despite the rumours

I get what you are saying, but that doesn't mean the other reports were wrong that the league as a whole was split.

But doesn’t Bob get his info by actual NHL teams?

& again I thought they were close but Bobs is by far the best in the business

Bob is the closest in terms of a full list, but he only talked to 10 teams.

Honestly it doesn't matter though. Even if every single team had Fantilli first, I trust the Ducks amateur scouts. I doubt many teams had Lindholm where the Ducks drafted him.

I actually am now wondering if Bob's sources are now former scouts? Or at least less connected? Corey Pronman had Carlsson going to the Ducks in his mock and said "A majority of my league sources think this will be Leo Carlsson. Some think it will be Fantilli."

Bob himself tried to really hammer home that (for the rankings) he only talks with 10 teams and how the prospects they ended up ranking 2-5 may not go where they ranked them. Fantilli & the Ducks especially so.

Haven't seen him do that before.

Problem is most of his polled scouts are not from teams in a position to pick anywhere near the top 3.

Also there is a zero % chance that Anaheim is one of those teams. They keep everything very tight lipped.

There were all sorts of rumors that they were taking Leo flying around all week before the draft

Pardon me if that doesn’t verify anything. Rumors are rumors. No one claimed to have a source in the Ducks. They never leak anything.

Carlsson will probably play in the SHL next season, but if he played in the NHL what would your prediction be? 15-25-40? or something like 20-40-60?
Only D+1 forwards to break 60 points or on pace to since 2010 were Mackinnon, McDavid and Matthews.

Carlsson is going to be a stud 1C one day but he probably isn't touching close to 60 in his first year.

Genuinely and outspokenly wanted Fantilli to be the pick, but I now see that was due to my ignorance about Carlsson. They'll both be outstanding, and when it comes down to splitting hairs about two bona fide studs, I'll defer to Verbeek. I haven't been thrilled with his asset management up to now but he played this game and he's earned the right to be judged on what he's building. Will enjoy watching it play out.

RNH?

And Jeff Skinner in 2010-11. And Laine.

Its happened a fair amount. And with scoring on the rise it wouldn't shock me to see Carlsson in the 50-60+ point range.

Laine and Skinner also did it.

I will just add, even though its probably been said before... HockeyProspect.com had Carlsson at #2 on their final rankings and he was at that spot all year long as well.

You don't have to love hockeyprospects work, and they, like every scouting team have been wrong before, but my point is this should be a clear indication that other NHL teams were not unanimous in the view that Fantilli was the #2OA slam dunk pick. They skew heavily towards NHL playoff performer types and are very inline with how NHL teams operate(such as not ranking Sawchyn at #13OA, even though I love Elite Prospects).

So the fact that his IQ and skill kept him clear notch above Fantilli gives me(a Ducks fan) lots of excitement.

Will he play in Sweden or USA this season? I wonder because we need him in the WJC squad

Most likely another season in the SHL
I'm fine with that or a year in the AHL where he may get better chance to place center and used to NA ice.
At least it wont be 2 or more years like with Michkov.

I want to see him work more on his skating. On the physical side I don't think he'll develop a mean streak like Hampus Lindholm who like to hit so I'd rather see him focus on skating and turn it into a giant plus. I think his shot is fine, his high IQ will enable him to use it more smartly imo.

His focus this off-season has been his first three steps, and his strength, which is what everybody would have wanted him to focus on, so he's got you covered.

I think he's ready for the NHL, but with a good off-season he'd be more than ready.

I think Carlsson could play in the NHL, but he has a bit more he can learn / accomplish in the SHL. So I think he should go back to Sweden but we will see. The benefit to him playing in the NHL this year is Anaheim can directly oversee his development and growth during the season.
