C Leo Carlsson (2023, 2nd, ANA)

Hilarious that the Ducks passed on Fantilli.

I'm so mad that his youth will be rotted in Columbus.

Ah, alright, thanks for that. A large amount of Ducks fans unfortunately once again got too hung up on a perceived consensus among sports media sources, so a sense of negativity around here isn’t too surprising. I’m optimistic about this being the right call.

Great pick! Little jealous y'all got him, but with the rumors about CBJ taking Smith over Carlsson.. I'm glad y'all took him and left us Fantilli over Smith:laugh:

Kopitar over MacKinnon.

It was the wrong choice, but he will still be an elite 1C who can put the finishing touch on Anaheim’s extremely strong young core and win a Conn Smythe some day.

So I’ll just assume the people drafting know more then me and HFBoards and ignore the hate.

What’s his NHL comparable? What’s his ceiling? Someone tell me about me re about him.

Exactly.

The Ducks get the best player (long term) in Leo Carlsson.

And they save the Blue Jackets from taking Will Smith.

Win-win.

Fantilli is of course awesome too and the fact that he is physically more ready makes him an ideal fit with the current win-now orientation.

I will just add that I 100% see Carlsson as a prototypical #1C in the NHL. Fantilli I think may end up on the wing...he's a unicorn but I'm not convinced he's a center in the NHL. Either way he'll be a productive player. Both teams should be happy tonight.

Yeah Carlsson is an easier projection at center.

But I like players like Fantilli at center. He won't necessarily be the prototypical guy where you want him carrying every puck, but there are a lot of centers like that where they work great next to a playmaking winger. My biggest thing for centers is that they have to cover defensively and start the breakout. But they can dish to a winger at the start of the breakout if they want. Matthews is giving it to Marner right away, for example.

Ducks Scouts >>> HF boards nerds (myself included).

These guys have earned a lot of trust, they are some of the best, if not the best, scouts in the league. I also love when scouts/GM's buck the Mckenzie list - it takes balls and conviction to do that, and I love to see it. I think they must have really felt strongly that Carlsson was the better player, because I think some of the intangibles Fantilli have would pull at Verbeek's heart strings. Looking forward to seeing the development of these players.

See thankfully on the Jackets, Gaudreau can do a lot of the carrying if need be :naughty:

Well, I was very pro Fantilli, but I was more than welcome to the idea of Carlsson on the Ducks, just had to digest my disappointment that my preferred guy wasn't the pick. Carlsson has the higher floor between him and Fantilli. I still maintain Fantilli has the higher upside but it's anyone's guess which guy of the two gets closer to their ceiling after adapting to the NHL. In any case, I think worst case scenario is Carlsson is a strong 2c for Anaheim, best case, first line superstar playmaker. Even a guy somewhere in the middle would be great. I'm big on guys like Zegras, McTavish, Mintyukov, Zellweger but Carlsson, to me, is the best draft prospect selected by the Ducks in a long long time.

I really don't think the Jackets had any intent of taking Smith over Carlsson (or obviously Fantilli).

I think there was a game of cat and mouse between Verbeek and Jarmo. Verbeek wanted Carlsson, but wanted to see if they could get columbus to pay up to get the consensus number 2 in Fantilli. I think Jarmo (smartly) was muddying the water on who they liked and putting quotes out there to make is seem like they were relatively indifferent on who they took between Fantilli, Carlsson and Smith. Neither showed their cards, and hopefully both got the guy they wanted.

alot of the pre-draft hype right now involves Anaheim learneing not too repeat history (i.e., not taking an american after a generational player was taken ahead of them (Crosby/Bobby Ryan in 2005 vs. Bedard/Fantilly in 2023) ... expect ANAHEIM to draft C LEO CARLSSON (OREBRO) on Wednesday nite
i receive a lot of hate for this post but once again i am right in my analysis
