C Leo Carlsson (2023, 2nd, ANA)

That was poorly handled and absolutely not recommended. It was clear as day it messed with development. Even Leo Carlsson, who is significantly more NHL ready than Eklund was, should probably be left in SHL another season if a team truly wants to do what's best for his development.
I agree that I would have preferred to have Eklund in the AHL immediately, but are you really saying that no 19 year old Swede should play in the SHL?

Wouldn't surprise me one bit if Carlsson, Michkov and Fantilli end up better than Bedard in a few years.

I’m sorry, how we dealt with Eklund? Gave him a shot to earn a spot on the NHL team in his draft season, when he didn’t earn it sent him back to Sweden for a year, then brought him to the AHL for a year and gave him another cup of coffee at the end of the season? Like… the normal thing to do for guys playing in European men’s leagues?
Yeah you got me I’m just distrustful of the Sharks, probably unfairly so. Though I would’ve prefered it if they had just kept him in NA and played him in the AHL.

About the Karlsson thing. It’s not about him not coming this year it’s about the fact that he hasn’t played since 2012 despite having soo many opportunities to. It’s Okay to not want to sometimes, it’s Okay to not want to most of the times, it’s Okay never to want to. But if its the latter then you kinda shouldn’t get the chance to play best on best either. That’s not a topic for this thread though, but since you brought it up I should explain.

Would love to see Leo, regardless of what team draft him, to play in the SHL next year as a center on a top-line. Think it will benefit him a lot á la Elias.

I’d like to see him in the AHL to start

Definitely. Absolutely no reason for him to move elsewhere.

So you don’t like the SHL as a developmental league, then? To bring us back on topic, do you think it would harm Carlsson to spend another year in the SHL? Personally, I think that Carlsson would be best served to play in the AHL next season like Rantanen did, but do you feel like it would actively hurt Carlsson to stay in Örebro?

It’s great as a developmental leauge. But I think in Eklunds case it would have been better to send him to the AHL to give him a full season on NA ice or otherwise send him back after camp to give him some time with djurgården before the SHL season started. But hindsight is 20/20.

I guess we’ll have to see with Carlsson. Bäckström was probably NHL ready at the draft but they still opted to have him stay in Sweden for another year. Granted the SHL (SEL) was a lot stronger back then.

I’ve watched prospects in the SHL/SEL for ten years now, and it’s definitely changed a lot as a league. The SEL I watched Elias Lindholm play in is not the same league that I watched Carlsson play in this year. I personally am not a huge fan of the current SHL as a place to develop high octane forwards, but I will obviously defer to Swedish folks on that.

It’s probably better as a developmental leauge now than it was then in many aspects. However the SHL/NHL tweeners leave much sooner for the NHL now than they once did, if not they go to Switzerland because the money is better, so the competition is not as good. The SHL has a big problem with this.

what did change? playingstyle?

Only if Bedard gets badly injured. Otherwise, he's the real deal and close to McDavid talent-wise.

I wouldn't be too shocked if Carlsson ends up better in the long run, but I would be a bit more surprised at the other two, especially Fantilli.

Has a Swede ever gone at #3 overall? Off the top of my head I can think of Landeskog and Hedman at #2 Raymond and Bäckström at #4 but no one at #3

Names in this thread have been Kopitar/Malkin/Barkov/Backstrom/Sundin

Big centres that are solid all over the ice.

And I'd bet money that in his prime he'll be better than at least Backstrom, Barkov and Kopitar. I don't mean that as a slight against them either.
