About 2 hours until Hallam releases the preliminary roster for the worlds, but Aftonbladet are already reporting that Carlsson made the team. Anything else would’ve been a major shock though.

About where he ends up I truly don’t have a horse in this race but seeing how SJ dealt with Eklund, it gives me the shivers thinking of Carlsson going there.

When was the last time a draft eligible made the Swedish WC team? Must have been ages ago.

Assistant GM for Sweden at the WC is Josef Boumedienne, chief pro scout for CBJ.
If he's available at 3 and Columbus passes that's gonna be a big oof.
It's very hard to believe that the decision to pick whoever other than Fantilli or Bedard over Carlsson would be justified by mere hockey related reasons. He brings so much to the table Jackets have been severely lacking at center since PLD. I think there would have to be something really fishy about his character (which I haven't noticed in interviews available to all of us) for Jackets to entertain other options with their top pick.

I think they'll manage. Fantilli is also pretty much a surefire number 1 center.

Incredible top 5 this year.
I'm not so sure on Fantilli being a surefire 1C, at least not a high end 1C. He's got the tools but I have concerns about his processing speed. As a devils fan I had some of the same concerns with Pavel Zacha, though Fantilli doesn't concern me nearly as much.

I expect him to end up as a ~35g ~70p center, which is obviously still a very good player, but would put him right around 30th in PPG among centers last year. I see Carlsson as a ~35 goal ~90 point center.

Bäckström, at least I think so.
Oh I see others beat me to it.

Hallam (Sweden NT's coach), on Leo making the Worlds roster:

A player not thought for Worlds this season but who we brought to some of these pre-tournaments and thought he stepped out on the ice and showed that he earns this opportunity to play at Worlds. A center who breaks the mold on our team. We have solid(or rather: defensive) centers but Leo stands for more offensive creativity.

It's very exciting with these young players who get better week by week. It's so cool with Leo and his way to enter a locker room, at that age, and be so humble but also unaffected by the situation. It's like the most natural thing for him to enter Tre Kronor's locker room and sit on the bench and chat with the guys. And then go out and dare to play his game.

Still looks like he's adjusting into that big body. Young man/boy controlling a big man's frame.
I think he gets better. Its his smarts I like 👍

CBJ's Director of Professional Scouting is team Sweden's AGM.. He's most probably a lock for Columbus.

Seems like Leo and Lucas Raymond will play togheter during the start of the WC at least. Hallam answered something a llike "Yeah, they are a duo that we look at what to complete the line with".

Does Fantilli remind you of Taylor Hall?

When he races in carrying the puck at top speed and then makes a blind pass to space or takes a low percentage shot it reminds me of Hall. Taylor Hall on offense with a great physical two way game at center.. that's still pretty great.

But I'm with you I see Carlsson having the highest upside. He's been ahead on my list all year though I haven't made a final decision between these two.

I’m sorry, how we dealt with Eklund? Gave him a shot to earn a spot on the NHL team in his draft season, when he didn’t earn it sent him back to Sweden for a year, then brought him to the AHL for a year and gave him another cup of coffee at the end of the season? Like… the normal thing to do for guys playing in European men’s leagues?

Very much so. Though he doesn't quite have Hall's motor IMO. He seems to excel when he's able to slow things down a bit, even though that's not always his preference.

I do think Fantilli becomes a very good player but I don't see him becoming an elite center.

Yeah I had to look up how you guys have handled him after I read that comment, and all I could think was that seems like literally exactly what you want to do with your prospects.

Honestly, it’s probably because we didn’t release him (which was Eklund’s choice) for the WJC in the summer 2022. I’ve seen the same poster say he’s going to change his username because Karlsson didn’t go to the WC this year.

That was poorly handled and absolutely not recommended. It was clear as day it messed with development. Even Leo Carlsson, who is significantly more NHL ready than Eklund was, should probably be left in SHL another season if a team truly wants to do what's best for his development.
