Is he really a top 3 pick in this draft?

This thread was created late 2021, less than 18 months ago
just 13 pages in that span., hasn't been a post in about a month.
- not much talk around here

Finished the regular season with 25 points in 45 games, is that good in the SHL?
He is signed through 2025. - will play in the SHL until 2025?, any reasons why he wouldn't?.

He is listed at 6 foot 3, around 200 lbs, center / winger
after reading all the posts, he has mostly played as a winger,
but few posters suggest he will be a center in the NHL?
- because of his size?

Late 2004 born, but December born is always a big +, so there's that
but does the fact that he is not 2005 born effect his draft position?.

What are his games downsides; the stuff he needs to work on?
There hasn’t been many more posts about him because there isn’t much more to say. He could go anywhere from 2-4 and that really hasn’t changed all year. I think he’s improved throughout the year but he’s had some inconsistency issues you’d expect in a young player at times.

Leo Carlsson will most likely play in the NHL next year depending on who drafts him. I wouldn’t say he’s the fastest player, but he he’s great with the puck and can utilize his size and puck handling ability to his advantage when it comes to puck possession and zone entry. He’s able to make high-end skill plays in tight and his shot is definitely adequate. He’s not a parameter player by any means either. He’s great in front of the net and has the handling ability in tight to tuck in quick rebounds. When you watch him, it’s really hard to believe he’s so young because he’s certainly an impact player on his team. He makes excellent plays in the offensive zone and really does have a phenomenal combination of high-end skill and vision. He is going to be a great player I think.

Carlsson is going to have to get stronger and fill into his frame but I anticipate his making great strides in strength and conditioning this summer. His skating isn’t bad but I think he’s going to need to improve his acceleration a bit.

If a team was to take Leo over Fantilli I would completely understand. I actually think Carlsson is more offensively dynamic but doesn’t necessarily have the same ceiling. He is sort of in the middle of Fantilli and Michkov in terms of Risk-Reward ratio of drafting him if that makes sense and the certainty of Adam Fantilli playing center is a huge factor in Fantilli being ranked ahead of Carlsson for me.

I’m not sure if Carlsson is a center because, frankly, I haven’t seen him play center. If he does end up playing center, it won’t be because of his size alone. He has the hockey sense, puck handling ability, and vision to be a center. But, he might not have the skating right now to be a first line center (which might ultimately make him a first line winger).

I’m sure Swedes in this forum who are able to watch his games more than me could provide a better breakdown. But, that’s what I’ve seen this year.

Robert Nilsson is the outlier here, Eklund could be a bust I guess but othervise a good list to be a part of. It's a list of all draft seasons of 20 points in the SHL since 1990. Players like Pastrnak, W.Nylander and E.Petterson spent their time in Allsvenskan and not in SHL and could not enter this list. Though even if they did and scored alot that would only strengthen the correlation between a high draft point total in SHL and success in the NHL.

If the Habs end up with the 2nd pick, I hope that they would pick Carlsson. (personally, I would pick Michkov, as I believe that along with Bedard, they are at their own level above eveyone else. But I believe the reports that came out prior to last year's draft that the Habs and Flyers wouldn't draft any Russians.)

Back to Carlsson, I just believe that he has higher hockey IQ than Fantilli, and would be better suited to be the Habs true #1 center.

Yeah but Leo hasn’t played center. He’s listed as a center on EP, but I don’t think he’s played center at all this year. The Habs need center depth and Fantilli for sure will play center.

Watch the "could be a bust" Eklund put up over 60 points next year being fed by Leo Carlsson :naughty:

Yeah but Leo Carlsson looks like a perfect center. Like Barkov or Backstrom type. It's hard to imagine a case where he ends up as a winger long term. He has the size, strength, awareness, seamless transition ability, great playmaking, everything you want basically.

I know we want something better than eye test but being a good center in junior isn't necessarily better evidence that a guy can be a great center in the NHL.

Another apple today in the first period, would've been a goal but the goalie got lucky with the puck touching his equipment when he went 5-hole... But it ended up redirecting the puck under him to a fully free Eklind.

Yup, from a Habs standpoint in the draft if they had 2nd. Its Fantilli for me. I think there are less questions with him than Leo, and naturally a C. Leo up in the air on where he will find more success - at C or W.
But in terms of ranking (any team), I think

Fantilli 2a
Carlsson 2b
Michkov 4.. More skill and will be better than both imo but the Russia factor too scary. Im not convinced he even goes top 4 as of now.

But Carlsson thread, so I really think the dynamic between him and Fantilli is closer than we think. I suspect 3rd OA though. Silly draft this year

The more I watch those three players I really think they could go in any order and I could see either player end up being the 2nd best player in the draft.

Personally I would almost rather be the team that picks at 3.
